NOVI BELT INFO NEEDED
« on: March 01, 2022, 10:03:02 AM »
Wanting to add a Novi governor to the '55 F-head. Can anyone suggest the correct  governor drive belt/ part number to look for?
Would like to track something down locally. Thanks!

cjbilly,
Nice accessory!

I first searched the jeep sites.

https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/novi-governor_topic3277.html

I noticed the belts are different.  I'm assuming due to the pulleys probably not being identical (could be different diameters causing a difference in length).

Next, I searched for how to measure.  I remember taking an old belt in and watching them measure it to pull a new one off the hanger - unfortunately, you've got no belt to take in.  So, I think the best thing is to measure what you have to find out what belt will fit.

https://www.hogslat.com/simple-guide-for-measuring-fan-v-belts

What I noticed was the subtraction of 2" or 3" depending on width (I'm guessing to compensate for stretch).  You may need to compare the pulley grooves with your water pump/ alternator (I'd use the existing belt to see if it sits in the groove or not.

If I were doing this type of measurement, I'd adjust the governor all the way in before measuring - then perhaps the subtraction may not be needed.

While the instructions say to measure the belt, since yours is missing, I think you can measure the distance around the pulleys.  From what I'm reading, measuring down in the groove will not give you a good length (it seems all measurements are along the outside of the belt).  So any kind of strap could work as long as you can get it to sit on the pulleys.  I've also bought a belt unsure about its measurement.  Tried to install it, realize it was either too long or too short and took it back to get the next size up or down.

Hopefully, the shared stock numbers on the links above get you what you need.  Still, nothing wrong with measuring what you have to compare (any parts store should be able to look up the length of a belt).

If someone has a 3A Parts Manual, perhaps googling that part number may help with cross referencing.

Regardless, once you do get a belt that works, buy a spare or save the information with other part numbers for easier recall.

Rus- that is the exact info I was looking for- THANK YOU!

I knew there had to be some actual belt info floating around.....somewhere that someone would share. I did try searching Google and other sites before hand.  Just got frustrated. Measuring the approx. belt size and length was going to be the last resort- been there, done that.

Been trying to save all the different part numbers from the different PTO rebuilds as we roll along. We only want to do this stuff once.
Thanks again!!!
