Adding Key Start to ‘55 CJ3B
« on: January 11, 2022, 10:48:01 PM »
I want to change my ‘55 from foot start to key start. The main reason is that the floor starter button hole (new MD Juan body) places the starter button too close to the heater making it difficult to press. I have an alternator. There is currently no solenoid. I understand that the solenoid can be mounted to the inner fender, but I am unsure about how everything should be wired. Anyone have a wiring diagram that shows the routing and wire gauge for the wiring that makes up this circuit? Should there be a fuse (fuses?) Where? Pictures might be helpful, too. Thanks!

There's an article covering this on the CJ3B Page:

https://cj3b.info/Tech/Starter.html

It's all good reading but scroll down to, "Wiring the Starter and Solenoid."  It seems to describe it pretty clear. I don't believe you have to mount the solenoid on the fender.  It could also be on the firewall but a good ground is needed.  Just wherever you want it to be.

Here’s the 12 volt factory solenoid on my 3B.
Note: large red wire goes to amp meter.
The other wire come from key switch “start” terminal.
The copper bar attaches your solenoid to the starter post.
