Air Locker or Electric Locker Install
« on: January 04, 2022, 06:40:12 AM »
Hello Flatfender Fans: I finally got around to having a lockrite locker installed in my 3A rear diff. I am not satisfied with the clunk clunk noise it makes especially in left-hand turns. Exploring other possibilities, could an air or electric locker be installed in a Dana 44? A 3A is supposed to have a 44 rear, right? Not a 41? Or did Willys interchange those rearends in '49?

I found a link on the CJ3A Page that could help with 41/44 switch over:

https://www.cj3apage.com/index/Tech_Tips/Specifications/Axles.htm

Although not correct, a PO put a D41 under my '54 3B.  It's still there.

I have installed an E-Locker in a Dana 44 that came out of a ‘55 CJ5. I had to do some grinding inside the housing. You’ll have axle troubles, the E-Locker has a much finer axle spline (I don’t recall the actual exact count, but it’s much more than ten.) We converted that one to full-floating axles.

both the 41 and that vintage 44 are a ten spline axle, you have very few choices for a locker. i'd say you would have to go full floater to use a arb or any on demand locker like you want. (check herm the over drive guy ) for his kit. other kits may be avl these days

I have read something about being able to change out the spider gears in order to run a different spline count. I have an Eaton E-Locker in a D44 30 spline flanged from a 71 CJ5 which of course is a different critter to the early D44.

I would contact Eaton and ask if they have a setup that can work.
