CJ3B Frame Mounts for Tub
« on: October 16, 2021, 10:23:44 PM »
I picked up some replacement body mount out riggers (p/n 645072) for the frame of my '53 3B from Walck's.  Am I crazy or is this wrong? The bolt holes seem pretty far off.  I can't believe that the wear and tear on the original ones would have distorted them this much.

Any thoughts?

The holes on the replacement part should be round and not oval.
There should be plenty of good used originals available.
I’m sure I have a set of them.

I'm cutting/pasting cause I'm not seeing posts still.

Kelley,
This is, if I may, the curse of aftermarket - and for us, parts that don't quite match.  It could be that like other parts, what's being made here is a "one size fits all" approach with the explanation of either, "Yes, this will fit your jeep," or, "No one else has complained," approach to explaining why it doesn't match.

I've been through this with a couple of parts myself.  Some I've returned, others got altered.

A good choice would be to go with originals with Oldtime if you can.

I crawled under and measured (from the same angle that you're showing) from the inside face, where the rivet heads are, to the hole center and got about 1" (could've been 1 1/16") as the rivet heads and the bolt itself on that outrigger were getting in the way.  That spring attachment add-on bracket puts your pictured outrigger at #2 driver's side just behind the pedals.

I compared to the next two headed back to the rear.  Both the #3 (under tank) and #4 (rear floor riser) measured out further at 1 1/4".  I've got some fitment issues with my body that could affect where the bolt is centered (possible variations) but the outriggers are original.  This makes me think that what I measured might be correct.  A better idea would be to crosscheck with originals (with no body to interfere or bolts that have been there from the beginning) to see if in fact those different outriggers are the same or different with bolt hole location.

After confirmation on where the hole is located, another alternative could also be, weld/re-drill or try to see if Walck's has a "shorter" one (in case the hole locations are different).

Rus,

Thanks so much for making a few measurements.  What a helpful response.  I was worried this might be a case of crummy reproduction parts. I see the same measurements on my frame - they must be original. The second picture is the outrigger just aft of the first.  I'll look around for some NOS parts and Oldtime, I may reach out if I can't find any!
