Uphostery colors
« on: August 13, 2021, 07:49:08 PM »
Working on my 1964 CJ3B. I know the front seats were vinyl with cloth inserts and I have found the correct material and color at SMS Auto Fabrics. From what I understand, the rear seat was an option ($50.77!) that was purchased from the selling dealer at the time of sale? The very few photos I have seen of original rear seats, they all appear to be upholstered in black vinyl with no inserts. Does anyone know for sure? Could the rear seat be ordered with upholstery to match the front seats? Thanks!

I would have never thought of that possibility.  I don't have any references that would help.

I could see approaching this from two angles:  Like you stated, as an optional item, it probably came from the factory with a covering already.  The other possibility would be an owner wanting is seats to match and either gets the dealer to help or gets the matching upholstery to get it done by himself.

Rear seats certainly came in different colors, so theoretically you could get a matching set. On the "CJ-3B Seats" page of CJ3B.info you will see one in Barcelona Red.  But I'm guessing it would depend on what the dealer had in stock, or whether you wanted to wait.  Check out https://CJ3B.info/Owners/Wells.html which shows apparently original seats with the front in red and the rear in gray.

I just decided to go with black, to match my front seats. I know the front seats have been recovered, but they are in good condition and still look good. We found the original upholstery under the black covers, but it was a two-tone gold that I didn't really like. Maybe someday...

Thanks , seems like only 1962 - 64 came with that type of driver seat. I got lucky finding covers that look just like the seat covers that are already there. The wife hates them , but the price was right.
