Exhaust smells like anti freeze
« on: January 16, 2021, 11:31:16 AM »
Gents,
A stinker of a question, when I start up Triple X the exhaust smells like anti freeze for the first 4-5 minutes or so as it warms up.  When it reaches temp. the smell is gone.  No mis-firing, no rough idle, no oil in the anit freeze, no anit freeze in the oil.  Just a smell, is the head gasket shot, leaking, self repairing...any thoughts, Thanks

Very possible.  The heat may be causing expansion and sealing the leak.  I would also suspect a bit more white smoke along with the antifreeze smell if the head gasket is allowing coolant into the combustion chamber.

Since you're not seeing droplets where they don't belong, then the next thing I'd be watching is a decrease in coolant level in the radiator.

Is the smell burned coolant coming out the tailpipe, or a general smell of coolant? These old engines tend to seep coolant in all kinds of places. I would not be replacing the head gasket without more proof of a problem.

Have you pulled the spark plugs to compare to see if one or more is showing residue on them?

Good input, thanks.
Yes there is more white smoke during the warm up period.  I'll be pulling plugs this PM, checking oil and radiator as well.  Keep you posted.
