Out Of the Shop
« on: October 12, 2020, 06:53:06 PM »
CJ3B 57348-117993 first time out of the shop.  I had some previously scheduled work and had to clear the shop and since my body man has yet to finish my parts, Wilson-Wilson had to go outside for a while. I do have a cover on  it now.

I took my build post down because nothing was happening. It has now been a year since I took the body in for paint.  When/if I ever get this jeep back together, I will post a better project thread.

So for now, it's back to some M274 mule work that has been on hold for 6 months.

Wilson-Wilson is back in the shop, and I've had a little movement from the paint guy. Tailgate and grill are done. Can't mount the tailgate because the hinges are not painted yet, and I also ordered the wrong early model "4 Wheel Drive" decal.

Everything in the wiring harness worked correctly the first time around. I am very impressed with the new harness that I got from Carl Walck. Well made, great instructions and a reasonable price.

One setback, with the grill in place, I was able to mount the radiator and fill with coolant. I put 5 gallons of non-ethanol gas in the tank and was able to fire it up. That's when I noticed the gas tank was leaking badly along the rear bottom seam. I quickly drained the tank and removed it and carefully cleaned all the gas from the new paintwork. Does not look like it did any damage to the paint. I think I will replace the tank rather than trying to fix it, don't want to take a chance, it's a lot worse that I thought.  If anybody wants this old tank, come get it!

New to 3b, where did you get the stencil from?

There are several vendors who have them, but make sure you get the right one for your year model jeep. The CJ3B Page has an excellent article on the progression of the stencil.

The first style started being used on the CJ2A's in 1947 and through the CJ3B's until 1953.

The second style was used from 1954 through 1964.
The first style is most common and is available from most jeep parts vendors, but I had a time finding the second style, finally found this one on e-bay

new tank came today, now waiting for some Nitrile rubber for the strips that go under the tank. The regular rubber that I used under the other tank turned to mush when the gas hit it. This stuff is suppose to be impervious to gas.

Thanks.
I can't wait, either! Going on 13 months with the paint guy now. I will say, he does beautiful work, though.

It's going to be worth the wait though!  I'll be posting pictures of my paint job soon enough, and while it looks OK in the pictures, once you get up close, you can start to see my mistakes LOL!  Definitely not a professional job like yours is!

Got the new tank installed today with the Nitrile rubber pads, no leaks! Cranked and let it run for a while to check for coolant leaks, will drain the water out tomorrow and install antifreeze.  Getting cold, it was 43 when I got up this morning!
