'58 CJ3B Body Question
« on: November 20, 2019, 10:27:21 PM »
Hi All:

I'm wanting to satisfy my curiousity.  1958 CJ3B.  See before and after photos.  The first photo is as it was when I picked up the 3B.  The second, after I'd done some work.  Note that the frame around the windshield was red, like the body.  The glass was broken.  When I replaced it I found the paint color underneath was black.  So I cleaned it up and repainted it black.

Was it common to have a black windshield frame and a red body?  Or did I get it wrong?

And second question.  This Jeep was used on a farm most of it's life.  The original front bumper has been removed and a more heavy-duty one welded on.  Also, the frame has been extended a bit, and a platform has been added.  I noticed looking through photos of other 3B's that this is not unusual.  I don't really have a question, I'm just curious as to how common this might have been, and if anyone has an observation for me.  It is nice to sit on, but it ruins the approach angle.

The body is a bit of a mish-mash of aftermarket or homemade panels.  I'll discuss that in a separate thread later.

Thanks.

Richard,
Same issue concerning the w/s frame on mine (as a kid, I didn't care but this time around I noticed).  I do believe a lot were black (not all).  This is documented on all of the paint sample pages.

For your '58:

That deck could also be used as a portable "soap box" when you need to "preach" to the younger jeep drivers.

From what I've read the 3A's started life with the windshield painted the same color as the body. Later on the all the 3A windshield's were painted black. Willys probably followed suit with the 3B's.

Personally I like the look of your black windshield, good contrast with the red jeep. Nice looking rig.

AFAIK all 3B W/S were black from the factory.
It's likely that a few were repainted by the dealership.
Especially true if a hard cab was added.

Love the “soapbox” comment.  You’d be surprised how many time it has been used for just that by an announcer at a Jeep event!
