Thank you for your help, gentlemen. I will plan a rebuild for the winter. Incidentally, the new PCV routing seems to work much better--I was able to seal the oil filler cap and the engine still runs. There is a lot less smoke than there used to be. I got back from a drive tonight after dark so I didn't check the oil level yet, will do that tomorrow as well as check the air cleaner for oil build up. Hopefully, the check will show less oil consumption and less oil accumulating in the air cleaner. I realize that any improvement will be limited by the condition of my engine but I would be happy to be moving in the right direction.
