Northern Colorado Mountain Run, July 12 - 14, 2013
« on: March 07, 2013, 02:07:58 AM »
OK, here we go: I'm setting the date for the 2013 version of the Northern Colorado Mountain Run. Since July 4th is on Thursday this year, I figure the 5th, 6th, and 7th will be considered to be the holiday weekend, so I'm setting the following weekend, July 12, 13, and 14 as the date for the NCMR.
We'll be returning to our old campsite in the Upper Unit of Cherokee Park State Wildlife Area, and will run trails in that area.
As in the past, Friday will be a day for arrival & set-up, tail-gate 4-wheelin (we used to call it bench-racin'), demolition of adult beverages, horseshoe pitchin' if you wish, good food and campfire singin' ( nah!). Saturday morning there'll be time for a good breakfast, last-minute repairs/changes, and time for late arrivals to get ready. We will leave camp for the trails around 0900 and be out all day. Bring along lunch, drinkin' water, snacks, etc. don't forget mosquito repellent. We should return to camp late afternoon. I'm open for suggestions for Saturday's supper - Pot-luck, Rock Stew, Each His Own, what's your suggestions?
Sunday morning I'd like to have a "Community Breakfast"- everyone pitch in their breakfast supplies, we'll have one person cooking all the bacon, one cooking potatoes, one eggs, etc. if you have a specialty, such as Dutch-oven biscuits, you can do that. We'll do a short ride for those that want to, then break camp & head for home. We should all be homeward bound by Noon or shortly after.
If anyone has a problem with the date or anything else, let me know and we'll see what we can do. Any ideas or suggestions,or questions, speak up! Mark your calendar!     BW

BOOGITY BOOGITY BOOGITY!!! LETS GO JEEPIN' BOYS!!!

Bruce,
I may be able to make it this year.  I doubt I'll get Rachel to come.  She prefers to pee in a toilet.  Go figure. :-?

Oh man, I wish I could be there.
1,000 miles is a bit too much of a trip in a 3B.  ;D

When I retire, I want to move to Colorado. Then I can go on all these fun rides.
Maybe in 2020. Sigh.

1000 miles? That's nothin'...That is a days drive if you put the jeep on a trailer. heck If I have time and my jeep isn't ready I'd drag your jeep there for ya. (Assuming I am not flat broke by then.)

Here's what Bruce posted...

near as I can narrow it down, the gate into Cherokee Park State Wildlife Area, Upper Unit, off of Larimer County Road 80C, is at: 105*34'24"W ; 40*55'40"N. The actual campsite is at: 105*34'20"W ; 40*55'31"N.
If no one beats us to this site we'll have plenty of room and a latrine. If someone does occupy it before us, we'll be in the general vicinity. This has been a good campsite for us in the past with a central location and good access to trails in the area. Other than the "primitive" latrine, there are no facilities, this is "primitive" camping. It is accessible by motor home, although it involves about 21 miles of not-too-well-maintained dirt road. Just don't get in a hurry, it'll be alright. BW

Edit: Here's directions for those who don't do the GPS/Map & Compass thing too well:
Take Hwy 287 north out of Ft. Collins, past Ted's Place ( where hwy 14 branches off to the west), continue north past the Owl Canyon Road, past the Colorado Lien Co. quarry, and past the old Forks Hotel at Livermore (actually, the OLD hotel is no longer there, it burned & was replaced). Continue north on 287 just a couple of more miles to the Cherokee Park Road, just before mile marker 370. Turn left, (west) on road 80C (the "C" is important). After about 18 miles, the road will fork, stay left, on 80C, about four more miles, .4 miles past the "22" marker, and turn in at the "Cherokee Park State Wildlife Area, Upper Unit" on the left. Thru a gate & over a cattle-guard. Just inside the gate is a fork, stay left for about a quarter mile to the campground on the right.
BW

end of quote...

It is a good time, do not miss it if you are able to go!! I am stuck in Michigan for the week with work so no go for me.

Well, the Northern Colorado Mountain Run for 2013 is over, but surely not forgotten. I'm sure that a good time was had by all. We did some hill climbin', some rock-crawilin', some mud-boggin', and some tail-gate 4-wheelin' (we used to call it bench-racin'), some good-food eatin', and a little bit of barley-pop drinkin', We didn't get rained on on the trail. The only break-down we had was when Jamie flooded his motor. Seriously. Flooded. At least he got to try out his new winch.

We had four jeeps, and eight people counting my daughter who came up late. She and I went for a ride while the others were preparing to go home, and we spooked up a big-ol' black bear! Sorry, he was there & gone before pictures could be taken.

Speaking of pictures, Lew and I were running true to form, and having too much fun to take pictures. Jamie and Ray took some tho, and Jamie has promised to post them as soon as he can. We shot some great video's too. Just wait 'til you see them!

Well, I'm re-heating left-over rock stew, and it smells like it's about ready, so, see ya later! BW
