Vacuum booster plumbing
« on: March 05, 2013, 08:35:57 PM »
Can anyone share a pic of the plumbing required for the fuel pump vacuum booster that powers the windshield wiper? One line comes off the vacuum booster to the wiper motor but I'm not sure where the other lines goes. I had the wrong fuel pump and no wiper vacuum lines on my Jeep. I've found good pics of the riggings on the windshield but not under the hood. I am installing a new pump/booster this week.

The other goes to a port on the intake manifold. That is how the vacuum is generated. I don't a have a picture though.

Hey Ryan.

This was pretty early on. I do not have the 3A pump and the connections at the pump ended up backwards. Things have changed a little on mine, but you can at least get some ideas.

That old PCV looks silly.

Thanks Tim! Ironically, I was just crawling thru your Photobucket pics trying to see how you rigged yours. Nicely done.

Oh. That's great.  Didn't think anyone looked at that stuff but me.  I'm always happy to contribute.  Which pump did you get?

Tim, is that an original double action pump or a new one?

I got the fuel pump with vacuum booster from Walck's. Not cheap but looked like one the nicer ones out there. No glass bowl though. I like the one I removed but it was leaking fuel pretty bad. Who knows, I may overhaul it and put it back on. No pic of the new one but here's the old one:

I see on the picture the Uncle Vin posted, it is the metal top. And Ryan, yours had a glass top originally? Cool! My suspicion was correct then in the FAQ I put together about fuel pumps.

I have no idea if my glass bowl pump is original or not. I had posted the question here last year and the general consensus was that it was only used on later models like the 3B and the CJ 5's. Your post the other day raises the question again. I'd like to think it was original but I cannot confirm it. If I can, it'll be going back on the engine after a rebuild.

I think the glass ones can be found on late '53 3As.

Nate, Nah. Not original. It's a replacement that I think belongs on a 3B or CJ5. I did enjoy your post on the fuel pumps. I was always under the assumption that 3As came standard with just the vacuum pumps.

Ryan, That glass top double action is awesome. Love those glass tops!! [smiley=thumbsup.gif] I would definately rebuild that baby!!

These old fuel pumps are an item with high failure rates. It is extremely unlikely that any running CJ-3A still had the original fuel pump past the 80's. I have never seen any documentation to indicate anything other than part number 647911 being used throughout CJ-3A production. 647911 is an AC series CF fuel and vacuum pump.

I installed the new pump tonight but cannot get fuel to the carb. It sounds like it's working but no fuel pumps through. I tried taking the top cover off the pump and manually adding fuel to try and prime it. Still no luck. What else should I be doing? The previous fuel pump was leaking but aside from that was functioning as it should so I'm pretty sure everything else is good. I had the old pump off a few times and never had any trouble re installing and having it work immediately. What am I missing with this new one?

Do I even have the hoses connected properly?
