Wheel color for Luzon Red CJ3A....beige or yellow
« on: June 01, 2018, 09:47:47 PM »
Hey folks,
I may take a ride over to the local auto paint store tomorrow....I want to pick up a quart of paint for my wheels. Now, I know my '50 was Luzon red, as there is tons of original paint all over the thing under the layers. The 4 wheels that came with the Jeep also are original I think because I sanded some layers off those and saw a yellow-ish color with a luzon red pinstripe. Problem is the wheels are quite orange/rusty hue and the "yellow" is faded...I can't tell what color it is exactly. I've seen the CJ2A guys say those things had Universal Beige for wheel color for Luzon red. But when I look at my wheels, they look more pale yellow than beige. And the 4wheel Drive logo also looked yellow, not beige when I sanded down to that. Did CJ3A's use yellow as a wheel color?
This might be moot because when I look a Universal Beige, I don't like it. I may just go for a pale yellow anyway, such as Nassau cream (willys color) or even a 60's Chevy Butternut yellow. I think it looks better. But I'm still on the fence.....
Any comments?
Thanks!
Dave Miles

My jeep was originally Luzon Red.

I preferred the gray which I think is called Picket Gray.

Went round and round picking a wheel color and finally just picked a red that I liked...and I still like it. Rustoleum Regal Red....

For what it's worth, and accounting for digital cameras and computer screens, the picture shows a sample of the surviving wheel color that was on my '51.

Looks pale yellow to me...!

My 50 was also Luzon Red originally. When I cleaned my wheels I found a light gray with a Luzon pinstripe.
People think I go out of my way to * them off.
Trust me, It's not out of my way at all.

Thanks for the comments.
My wheels also have some remnants of paint on the backside near the stud holes, but even those areas are too worn out to assess true color. I did some more image searches for CJ3A's and it does seem like it's all over the map.
Sunset Red (Orange) is definitely a popular wheel color!
I guess I'll just go with my instinct (and preference) and go for some pale yellow.
I didn't get to the store today, but I'm sanding and prepping the wheels now.

Go with what you like as you will be looking at it more than anyone!

Here are some internet examples...you probably already made a search....

I took off my last two wheels to grind, blast and de-rustify.
On one wheel, the backside of the center section near the lug holes was basically dark dirt brown, but I noticed it wasn't scaley. So I washed the heck out of it with soap and water and found a great patch of the yellow used on the wheels. It's yellow, not beige.

Yes, I'm being a bit over the top with this, but I like the idea telling people that the colors they will see are what was on there in 1950. (It is amazing the vast majority of folks who see my currently unpainted hulk assume it should be olive green). I like the idea of colorful Jeeps.

Anyway, the picture isn't great (lousy colors in cell phone camera) but yellow it is for the wheels.

Great find and well preserved!

Like you I try to preserve the past....when I had my wheels sand blasted I protected the old paint and then taped it off when applying the new paint......just a little remains but better than nothing....it's the same location as your's....

Also I left the inside of my tool box lid Luzon red in case someone ever wanted to know the original color of the jeep....

Everyone expects a jeep to be OD.....

I like telling people that the CJ stands for "Civilian Jeep"...it a real enlightening moment!

Good point. CJ stands for civilian Jeep! They got colors!

I am preserving some Luzon red under my VIN tag too. Who knows: somebody, someday might appreciate it!
