Gas tank
« on: March 30, 2018, 01:12:53 PM »
Hi guys, I'am installing my gas tank, when setting it in place I found that the Neck of the tank sets on the body opening, not letting the tank to lay flat on the floor. Is there something that goes under the tank to rise it up so the neck is centered in the hole? Thanks for any light you can shine on me, Al.    PS, I forgot to say it's a 1951 cj3a

I used some of this under my tank.

It's just thick heavy felt, I'm not sure if it's treated with anything.

How far do you need to raise your tank?

I used wood strips long ago on the CJ-5.

You don't really want the tank flat on the floor anyway, it would trap moisture and the rust wouldn't be far behind.

I need at least an inch. Right now I have an old Toyota fan belt glued to the floor, probably will have to use treated wood.Al

I actually like the fan belt.  You could also try blue board or a dense foam of some sort.  I have some rubber under mine.  Use only enough to support the tank so that air will circulate well around it to assure dryness.  Again, that fan belt is a pretty sweet solution. 8-) 8-) 8-)

Hockey pucks are 1" thick.  I cut several in half to get the TK up so the neck did not hit.  I had gotten a box of 50 used pucks several years ago off ebay.  I also used them to get a 1" body lift on my '52 M-38.

I just took my tank out today. It only had 1 layer of cardboard under it. It was quite soggy...luckily I think it was more oil than water. I am probably going to put something different under it but I don't see how I could get a hockey puck to fit, tank was already pretty high coming out the side of the body. I like the rubber idea though. Will have to see what I can find.
