Sending Unit Gasket

 So I purchased a "cork" gasket from Walks and put it in dry and it leaks no matter what I do.

 Is there a better gasket material? Or should I just get a new one and use form a gasket to help it seal?

The holes on my sending unit are a bit ridiculous.  Had to try it in every conceivable position to have it fit and then, close is the best I could do.  The screw holes don't seem to be evenly spaced.  Anyway, my cork gasket isn't leaking right now but I have also seen rubber gaskets which may work better for you.  I wouldn't hesitate to coat it both sides with gasket maker.  The leaking and the constant gas smell will drive you nuts.

I found that most the leakage came through the threads..same problem on both jeeps...a little frustration and some thread sealer did the trick....

 New Gasket on order... ordered two this round...

The real culprit could be a reproduction tank. In an original fuel tank the ends of the screws are not in contact with the fuel. On reproduction tanks they are, and so the screws can leak along the threads.

 Well, life is what you make of it...

 After pulling my sending unit out, and saucing up my first gasket with sealer I realize that there are some tabs on the sending unit and cut outs in the tank... no problem, snip snip and I have openings in the gasket for them...

 Then I notice that they don't line up, I must have miss cut..  No problem, I bought a second gasket...

Cut that sauce it up and ... What The...  The tabs in the tank, and the sending unit are no where near each other...

 So much for an easy job... Try again tomorrow I hope my sauced up gaskets will keep....

Well today�s effort went much better, I had more time this morning and was able to slow down.

It seems the sending unit tabs don�t sit in the groves of the tank anyway since theee were three tabs on the sending unit and two notches in the tank.

The bottom line is the sending unit would never sit flat against the gasket unless you notch the gasket.

And way fixed and not leaking now

Good job...I don't remember the tabs on the sending unit...is it a new unit?

I think I re-used the original..it still works...but my tank is an old replacement so the screw holes go all the way through...

Hi Randy Yes, both my sending unit and tank were replacement. I do not know if my original sending unit would have worked or not, I figured I'd just replace it. My replacement tank has the holes for the screws go all the way through as well...

Easy enough, my favorite Permatex "Aviation Form A Gasket" worked like a charm on screw threads as well.
