CJ-3a L-134 With Carter WO Problems...
« on: January 31, 2017, 02:45:04 PM »
Hi all, new to this site, not new to jeeps or wrenching on cars. I have a Jeep CJ-3a that is used as an on-farm rig, pulling pipe trailers, doing irrigation runs. Fairly light duty, lots of starts.

The problem I am having is this; The jeep starts great, throttles up fine, and will get me about halfway across the farm (about a mile) before the problem shows up. It starts dying when any throttle is applied, and seems to be flooding out(?).

I rebuilt the Carb, completely to specs (float at 3/8 w/o gasket, etc.), cleaned ever nook and cranny, blew out the jets, checked all settings, checked the gaskets and the heat gap, fuel filter, etc. Still does it. Runs fine until it warms up a bit, then as throttle is applied it dies. hard to restart, but if you catch it soon enough and let off the throttle, it will recover to an idle.

Brand new plugs, that seem to be very excessively fouled for how new they are, making me think flooding. That said, everything is set right, float checked, needles checked, jets, etc. Doesn't seem to be anything electronic related. I'm stumped. Any and all help/ ideas are appreciated.

Thank You!!

How about the accelerator pump? If it is set to high it allows gas into the idle circuit causing flooding. Did you replace that? Is it set properly with the gauge? When I first rebuilt mine it did that to the point of gas coming out of it and I adjusted the pump and all is well. Scout Pilot is the expert on these carbs and if you google rebuilding a CJ3a Carter (I think WO) you can catch his video there. It has in-depth instructions on rebuilding and setting the pump on these carbs. Also did you have lots of play around the butterfly shaft. If so it needs to be machined and bushings put into it but I don't think that would cause it to flood, just poor performance. He will probably chime in or some others that can fix you up.Good luck.

Appreciate the idea, I did set it, but i will check it again. Quite possible that this is the case, as it seems to happen with acceleration only.

Thank you!

I might be wrong but if it's set to high it will also leak into the idle circuit when it idles but may not be enough to stall it. I ran mine in the shop on different occasions and never really noticed a problem, except it exhaust smelled rich, until I ran it on the road for a few miles and it would stall coming to a stop or idle with a strong smell of fuel. I adjusted mine by just taking the cover off my accelerator pump loosen the nut slightly, and taping it down little by little until it leaned out. I think if you go to much you will get a hesitation when accelerating because it's to lean. Have you checked out scout pilots video yet? I emailed him a few times and he was a big help to me especially with the pump.
Another problem I had was once the engine warmed up it would start breaking down. I replaced the coil and the condenser and that took care of that. But that would not be your problem since you are flooding out. Carry on, you will figure it out!

Sounds like yours was doing right about the same thing. I'll take a look at it tomorrow and let you know what I find. Appreciate the help!

Thank You!

Is your heat riser valve working correctly? A valve that is stuck in the open position will allow excess heat to the carb. This heat causes the fuel in the bowl to boil and the pressure forces fuel past the metering rod causing flooding.
Old fashioned service never goes out of style.

I stand corrected, you need to check the height on the metering rod. Actually the metering rod and the pump work in conjunction with one another from what I gather and both need to be set properly to work right. Like mentioned the heat riser valve needs to function and also the PVC valve disassembled and cleaned that's mounted on the manifold.

Just a dumb question, did you try removing your fuel cap.  You could be starving for fuel after running it a while because the cap vent is blocked.
