When I rebuilt my 3A 15 years ago I used a NOS rope seal from a very old gasket set I bought at a swap meet.  Does not leak one single drop.  Parked it over a piece of white cardboard after driving it and not a spot on it.  So the old asbestos seals work.

Wish I could say the same about the neoprene seal I put in last summer.  Not a drop the first day and now it's worse than it was before changing it. Are those nos rope seals still available?

I had a neoprene lip seal on my 4F134 fail after about 20 minutes of operation. It looked like the seal spun in the groove until it disintegrated.

shows what I did

I've done this for several engines and so far, I've lucked out... :-)
