Linda .... The threaded part is in the hanger.  If it is not usable, the hanger will need to be replaced.

Replacing the hangers is an interesting task as you need to learn to install rivets which is a new skill for most of us.

What do I look for to determine if they are  usable or not?

Al, If you're referring to the C-Shackles...

If they arent all bent up, can move freely, can take grease, and the rubber is in decent condition, they are probably okay to use.

The removal can be a challenge.  I had a set that were badly neglected. I was forced to use a cutting torch to cut and burn them out.  If not neglected, it is still important to know how the original C-Shackles were set up.  There are some Right Hand Threaded positions and Left Hand Threaded positions.  This is frustrating to verbalize so I made another one of my goofy drawings. An impact tool may be needed to get them apart.   Let me know if this confuses the issue ever further. ;)

If you do replace the shackles, don't be afraid to use all "Right Hand Threaded" shackles in 'All' positions.

Great art, tim!  If indeed we are talking about shackles, I would like to know how the grease gets into the center of the threaded bushing on the new Omix shackles, as they are not drilled down the center of the shackle like my old ones.

In the first photo, the grease has to come out of this little hole.

In the second photo of my old shackle, this hole is where the grease zerk is and where the grease enters the shackle shaft.

On the third photo of the new Omix shackle, you can see that no such grease delivery hole is drilled down the center of the shackle.

I put the old ones back on so that I can grease the threaded shackle bushing, even though they are too long for a 3A.

Sorry to diverge here...Admin. feel free to move or delete this post.  Won't hurt my feelings at all!

Tom,

It looks like you may not have CJ shackles on your Jeep, can't really see the entire shackle in the photos. The grease fitting on a stock CJ shackle is in the end of the threaded bushing, not the C part.

I'm thinking you have M-170/late M-38A1 shackles. Perhaps the side plates were not installed?

Bob, true, I do not have 3A shackles - they are about an inch too long.  However, they do work - I can still thread down the threaded bushing nice and tight.  The grease zerk threads into the end of the threaded bushing just like you describe.  Then down the length of the C shackle is drilled a hole for the grease, which then hits a hole perpendicular to it exiting into the mid section of the threaded bushing thereby greasing the interior of the shackle.

I had purchased four new Omix shackles last fall in order to have them all the correct length.  But, there are no holes for grease drilled down the centers of each arm of the C shackles.  Which begs the question...how does the grease get into the center of the threaded bushing, if the C shackle isn't drilled to allow the grease to enter?

I am having a hard time describing this.  Another way to look at it is this...when I put a grease gun on the zerks on the new Omix shackles, the grease just dead-heads against the ends of the non-drilled solid C shackle.   There is no route available for the grease to get into the center of the threaded bushing.

Regular CJ C shackles are not drilled. The threaded bushing doesn't come up tight against the end of the shackle so the grease just goes around the end and down the threads.

I used grade 8 bolts and nuts to reinstall mine.  I figure with that and the 1" long welds on all 4 corners they weren't going anywhere.
