Oil pan removal

I want to remove my oil pan and clean out any, all gunk and make sure I don't have any spare parts just floating around.

How much room do I need to drop it? I have a snow plow bracket directly below it, that will limit the down travel to an inch or so. I am hoping that is enough room to get the pan out, but most likely not.

The bracket runs from frame rail to frame rail (like a cross member support) just about where the oil drain plug is. Thankx  jp4ever

I'm thinking it will be a little tricky.� A few things hang pretty low, starting with the oil pick up assembly.� It's not all the way to the bottom of the pan, but it's close.� Some rear main bearing caps have a drain tube that are below the lower edge of the block too.� The crank can be positioned so the counter weights are up and out of the way.

 The oil pick up assembly is not shown here, but the rear main drain tube is.� Note: Your rear main might not have a drain tube...



Give it a shot.� I think I would try dropping the pan low enough at the rear to get it below the bell housing and slide it down and out toward the back.� �If you can't get it out, remove the plow brace.

Here's a shot of the oil pickup hanging down. The pickup head will rotate up some to give you a little more clearance. When you do get the pan off hopefully your motor looks a little better than this one.

Thank you, the pics help a lot. I have read about the rear main drain tube but had no idea what it looked like.
 
Is the oil pickup, missing a bolt closest to the outside of the motor? Will the oil pick up just ''fall off''?  The main reason for pulling the pan is to see what it looks like inside, after two short runs 5 minutes or less We get chocolate milk oil, when draining.

I have had antifreeze in the oil before and it does not look the same, plus the under side of dipstick is dry.

athawkk11 removing the snow plow bracket wont be easy (what is) it is all one piece 3 bolts per side and I forget how many up top, it has been on for a lot of years!

Good eyes. Yes, I removed that bolt prior to the pic. After removing the other bolt the whole assembly drops right off for easier cleaning. If need be you can remove the cover from the assembly for better access to the screen. Unless yours is really gummed up like this one, you can probably get away with just swishing it around in some solvent without having to remove the cover.



My oil pan gasket kit came with the small gasket for the surface where the oil pickup bolts to the motor so check and see if yours has one too.

Ryan_M Thanks once again! We got an advance auto gasket so nothing extra. The walcks order should be here tomorrow hopefully the oil pan gasket will come with the extra gasket.

What turned out to be a jeep that ran when parked, 15 yrs ago. is turning into quite a project.

I am starting to think we will have to go big or go home. I hope we can just fix one thing at a time, drive a little then get on to the next learning experience without making more work along the way.

My daughter was losing interest after four months of not getting it started, then it started! one drive down the yard and back... hooked again

I didn't even notice the pick-up gasket came with what I bought until had already reassembled it using Permatex instead. You should be able to make it work either way.

As for your "ran when parked" comment. If it makes you feel any better the pile in garbage in the pictures above was sold to me as "recently rebuilt, runs mint!". I knew better, but annoying nonetheless.

If you can proceed with "Fix a little bit, drive a little bit, fix a little more..." it does help keep the motivation level up. And by driving it you will be able to better identify what needs immediate attention and what you can skip over for now.

You might try a modified "fix a little bit approach" where you work on fixing an entire system at a time.  For example, fix/replace the entire brake system at once vs. putting in a wheel cylinder here and a master cylinder there.  Your jeep will be out of commission for weeks at a time (maybe) but not months/years like a major frame off repair.  Going this route also gives you a solid base to build upon.

I like to focus on the major safety systems first (brakes and steering) and then move to the suspension, engine, tranny/tcase, body, ect.  If you wiring is old or has been hacked and cracked you might move that system up the list to avoid fires and shorts.....or keep a fire extinguisher close by.

Thanks to all who replied! can I hijack my own thread?
We did not worry about pulling the oil pan just yet, instead we re-wired the starting system... minus the generator and amp. gauge

New solenoid, then to key switch, then to push button ,starter. It worked! we added some k1 and transmission fluid drained oil and it looked a lot better.

This was all after daughter got it into 3rd gear in the yard, She is pretty happy and I am two.

Drive a little fix a little... working so far... still a long way to go thanks again jp4ever fun heck yes!
