Engine Number question

The engine number on my 1950 3A is 3537887.  When looking at the database, I see all the numbers listed have a "J" for the second digit.  Any ideas why I have a 5 instead?

I never noticed if my engine number had a J or not. I will check at work tomorrow

If the engine was originally installed in a CJ3A, it will have a "3J" prefix.

The L134 engine was used in a number of vehicles...starting in the 1930s...and all the way to the mid 60s.  I can't say for sure, but in this day and age, I'll bet it's more common to find a non original engine in a Willys Jeep.

This serial number is unusual.  It's got me scratching my head. Some of the fonts look correct, but there are different "3s" and different "7s".  Also, the "8s" don't look period correct to me. 

What is the casting number along the lower edge on the passenger side?

Could this be a Hobart welding engine or some sort of a industrial?

It's from a Henry J. Look for a tag riveted to the block below the distributor.

What are the numbers and letter cast on the block on the drivers side down low near the rear?

Well there you have it.  Nothing ever looks "unusual" to Bob W.

What do you think of those 8s?  Is that an acceptable font for a Henry J?

There is a tag below the distributor, but I could not see anything stamped on the tag.  On the driver's side, "12" is on the block about mid way down toward the rear.  Below that is 10-8 C (maybe)  Its hard to make out.  Maybe 10-3 C.

I went back and looked again at the tag.  Under the dirt and grime is red paint and it looks like 040 is stamped on it.

Looks like it's probably a 1951 engine. I haven't had time to analyze serial number fonts yet. There are some strange variations out there.

I throw this in, if it has a .040 stamped on the tag, that's a builders tag, could be the block was decked and someone stamped there own number ?.

I've owned a couple Supersonics, the tag below the dist. had no brg. Sizes on it.
