Engine Break In Procedure
« on: October 04, 2015, 09:06:36 AM »
I am about to get my engine back from the machine shop. He re-sleved the engine and put new pistons, bearings, and a cam in. We took it back to the standard bore. I have a new oil pump, water pump, wear parts, etc. Al, from the machine shop told me it was important to bleed the Oil lines before starting so there is no air in the lines on startup. How do I do this?

There are a number of places along this side of the engine to fill the oil galley and oil pump...

The oil filter connection is what I use, but you can use the port for the oil gauge or either of the plugged ports that you see in line with the oil filter port and oil gauge port.

I disconnect the oil line at the side of the stock filter, rig up a filler hose, then pump oil until I hear it draining out the oil pick up.

Austin- Also remember that these flat tappet engines need more protection from cam wear than does a modern roller cam of todays cars.  Choose an oil with a high level of zinc, especially for break in.  It is being removed from todays oils due to catalytic converter issues- something you don't have to worry about on your old Jeep.
