Two questions
« on: September 27, 2015, 10:00:07 AM »
I'm in a pinch to get my motor rebuilt  to have it by October 24 so I can drive it to my college homecoming football game. The machine work on the block is coming along. I should get it back in the next couple weeks. I'm going through and cleaning up my parts that were hot tanked and have become curious about a couple things after close examination.

1) There is a hole on the top of the timing cover that has been closed up. I assume this is for a oil line. Where does that line go to and is it necessary?

2) I am not going to be rebuilding my exhaust damper. I can see it freezing up again in no time. Is it okay to remove it.

3) The two holes in the manifild. On my they have both been closed off. I realize that one is part of a vent with a valve that opens and closes and the other is for windshield wipers. Would it be alright to leave these holes closed.

Please realize that I'm not shooting for a nut and bolt restoration. I just want a fun driver. I'm spending alot of money on my engine and I don't want to make any poor decisions that will damage it in time.

Thanks in advance!

The timing cover hole is for the oil hose that connects the lower outlet on the oil filter to the timing cover.  If yours is plugged, it's likely that you don't have an oil filter on this engine.

A properly functioning heat riser and damper system work well to improve cold starts.  If you don't want to get it working, make sure the damper is closed to the bottom of the carburator.  It's unlikely to freeze back up in short order.  It probably took 30-40 years...and no maintenance for it to freeze up the first time.

The plugged ports on the intake manifold are vacuum connection points.  They should remain plugged if you won't be using an original vacuum wiper motor.

Sorry. But I must. No oil filter? Your fresh rebuild won't last as long as it could. Don't get me wrong. Your motor will serve you for years. Just not as many as you would see with an oil filter. Not restoration advice. Survivor advice. The same goes for the heat riser. And if you're going to do your own tuneups, having at least one accessible vacuum port for a vacuum gauge will help you keep tabs on your motor. Again, not restoration advice. Survivor advice. You've probably spent a good deal of money on it so far. Don't sell it short.

I do have a oil filter.  have parts from two engines laying around and got the timing covers mixed up. One was plugged where the oil line goes. The timing cover that I'm using has the threads. My understanding is that the oil line that connects to the bottom of the filter goes to the top of the timing cover. The oil line at the top goes to the fitting down by the fuel pump. One thing I want to make sure of more then anything is that I have the oil lines hooked up correctly.

How does the oil get back into the engine from inside the timing cover. It appears to be sealed up tight

Austin,
The lower portion of the timing cover is open to the oil pan.  Oil drains directly into the oil pan.
