Need some advice please

I drove my jeep daily last summer ('52 3a) until the end of August when it started to develop some fuel related issues. I thought it was a stuck float so I parked it in the garage to get to this winter. Well this winter has come and gone and I want to get on the road again. It fired up fairly easily a no ran but started to gush fuel out of the carb, lots of it! I shut it down pulled top off the carb, the float was free and set at 3/8". I dug deeper into the carb and Sam a lot of crud and decided a rebuild was in order. I got the master kit from walk's ( not that impressed) and completely dismantled including all those little aluminum plugs soaked it in cleaner and blew it dry. I put it all back together being careful to properly set the float, plunger and metering rod (using a gauge I got from� Walck's). Again it started up and after a few seconds began to puke fuel. What's up with that? It sprays out with such force and volume that I am wondering if something could have gone wrong with the fuel pump and it is producing way more pressure than the carb can handle. Any suggestions? I will show you a few pics so you know what I have.

Carburetor is mounted upside down !
It can't possibly hold fuel in that position.

Otherwise the problem must be fuel pump pressure related or inlet valve related.
Most likely the inlet valve is way oversize or it's inoperative.
And it's even possible that the float is not floating which leaves the inlet valve always open.

I set the float without the gasket and used a 3/8" drill bit as a gauge..

[size=12]Close examination shows you have no filter element in the fuel filter. No good for keeping crap out of the needle and seat.Do you have a filter between the tank and the pump? I'm guessing you have some small piece of rust hung up in the seat that won't let the needle close all the way. While you have it apart to clean that out, take a look at the tang on the float where it contacts the spring loaded needle and see if there is or isn't a gouge or large scratch. This too will give you needle grief in that it can cause the needle to slip and get * in the seat. Again allowing fuel to enter. One more test you should do, if you haven't already is bring a pot of water to a near boil and insert the float to check for leaks. Bubbles rising in a stream will tell you yes or no.[/size][/b]

If you need a paper filter replacement try the NAPA 3943. It will come with a new gasket as well.

I finally got a chance to get back to the jeep yesterday and now I know why we pay scoutpilot the big bucks! Took the float off and shook it and sure enough there was fluid in it. I know I did that before but maybe I should have turned the tunes down a bit. Anyway I waited till the wife was busy in the garden and put a pot of water on the stove to boil. Adding a half cup of vinegar and boiling the float in it for a few minutes made it easy to shine it up real good with only a gentle brushing with a brass brush. I did not see a stream of bubbles but there was one spot which consistently formed a single bubble. The hole itself was to small to see but I knew where it was. I used a sharp awl to puncture a bigger whole no more than than the diameter of a thin needle. Then I held it with the hole down and heated the upper part of the float with a heat gun. In a few seconds the fuel streamed out nicely til it was all gone. Then I dried everything up and sealed the hole with a spot of solder and soldering iron, (no open flame). While that cooled I cleaned up the kitchen, opened a window and sprayed a little febreeze. I reassembled the carb and it fired up and ran better than ever. Problem solved. I know this is probably just a warning so now I am going to get the filter element and look for a new float as well. Thanks for the advice.
