Speedometer Location
« on: April 14, 2015, 01:46:13 PM »
I am working on getting this jeep back on the road. There is so much grease and grime on the bottom of the transmission/ transfer case which makes it hard to find where the speedometer cable hooks into. Does anyone have a picture with the location. Thanks in advance.

This is the passenger side, just in front of the park brake drum...

Thanks. This Jeep didn't have the speedometer when I bought it and I was clueless. I ordered a new set of gauges. Hopefully I will be able to get everything shaped up by the end of this week.

Austin, welcome to the 3A Page.  Your avatar shows a pretty nice rig.  We would all enjoy seeing some larger photos though. ;)

Hopefully you have the speedo cable hanging around too.  If the inner cable doesn't turn very easy, you can pull it out and lubricate it with graphite.  This will help your new speedometer perform at its best.  If you also purchased a new cable, you're good to go.

Good luck.

Is there a seperate piece that the speedometer cable attaches into that threads into the transfer case?

The speedo cable has a thread female end on both sides.  It has an outer housing that is made of steel or plastic (?).

Then, there is an inner cable.  This is square and has tightly wrapped wire around it, except at the very ends on both sides.  The square end fits into a square notch inside the transfer case on one end, and the speedometer on the other.  This inner cable extends beyond the threaded female ends, so you should see it sticking out.  If not, it may be broken.

Here is a link to Walck's version...

I got my speedometer cable in today and put it on right away. It works, the only thing is the speed is off by about half. Is there a way to calibrate it? I was reading something on the internet about the worm gear and the possibility that i might need the correct worm gear that goes in the speedometer. Its aggravating that i bought a set of gauges on ebay that are suppose to be for the 3a, and apparently the speedometer wasnt.
