WOW that is loud...and would drive me absolutely NUTS.

If what Herm sends you doesn't eliminate the noise I have a couple spare trans and TC's. I'll gladly send you a care package full of innards if you need to continue the trial-and-error madness.

So, I opened the transmission today, thinking maybe something was amiss in the shift tower or that maybe there was a 7/16 end wrench in there....

But it all looked really good. Everything was tight, yet free. I turned all the shafts and gears and no notches or rough spots...no chips or chunks of metal splattered all over...

But, one question...

Is the large front bearing washer supposed to turn with the main input gear? The screwdriver points to the washer , and the gear, and they move together...

Thanks for the offer Ryan.......you may have to bail me out of this one....

Problem Solved!! Hooray!!

There is still a little noise but you would expect that...right from starting out in first gear I could tell the TC was a lot quieter, and all through the gears whether it be in direct or OD it was 98% quieter...there is still a small whine at around 40, probably gear mesh noise with the original output shaft gear, which was not changed, but that is just fine!

So once again, I swapped out the intermediate gear. I bought a used gear set from Herm, and though one tooth on the intermediate gear was slightly chipped (#%#&!!) in shipping from banging against the other gears, I dressed it out and it works just fine....

This jeep was used mostly as a power unit for farm implements, so whenever the PTO was in use the intermediate gear would have been spinning....it just wore out the bore I guess.

Pictures here...some are of the replacement gear and it's chip, and some of the old original gear...the pics are labeled.

Why is it that I can't ever get the Photobucket videos to work?

None the less, Great News!  Glad it's behind you.

Tim,

Here is one I posted on youtube...I used a gopro camera on this one and so the camera and the microphone are in a water tight case...so it's a little muffled.....this is a "before" video...

(And sometimes I have to play the photobucket videos twice to get them to run smoothly..)

Okay, I was able to get both versions to run this time.  That was a bit noisy.  I have a whine too, but not nearly that obnoxious.  Again, I'm glad to hear you've solved the problem.

I kept telling myself how pleasant it would be to drive without that penetrating noise.....

And it is.......pleasant!

Now it's everything I hoped it would be.......

What a difference! Sounds like a 3A now instead of a jetliner.
