Chipped Teeth
« on: September 17, 2014, 03:00:15 PM »
So elsewhere i have been posting about my intermediate shaft/gear woes, either real or perceived.

I drove it again last night and it just sounded awful....just not right...

So I took it apart again..

These pictures are of my NIB,NOS sealed and dated 1953, intermediate gear...

After about 45 miles of driving, and a little easy flat 4wd driving

Perhaps these things survive to be sold 61 years later because they were part of a bad batch of gears?

Very unusual. looks like the teeth are only chipped near the edge? It would take a load on just the edge of the gear tooth to cause them to chip there. Can't really tell from the photos but are some of the teeth peened over a bit on the edge? Perhaps damage from storage? That gear is only under load in low range. Of course it is difficult to see a noise through the internet but I'm not seeing a lot of 2wd noise there.

There are several chips on the beveled gear also..

I was in 4WD for maybe 2 miles since i put the gear in...

Crazy...

All I know for sure is it's not going back in..

And, there are no markings at all on this "new" gear. No part numbers, no makers mark, nothing....

The box is marked N.W. Auto Parts, Mpls. Minn...

Randy,
Do you think the chipped teeth are the source of your whine?  Could they be dressed a bit?

I could never tell if this gear whined or not, it was so loud otherwise...more like a roar..!

I'm going to put the old gear back in..

Did you inspect the gears close before using or did you just clean it up and put it in? I see a lot of rust pits and other damage that would not be there with a real NOS part stored in cosmoline and paper, unless it was stored under water.

I don't think it really is a NOS part, I think it's a used part.

Another thing is, unless you replace all the gears in the tranny and transfer cases you will still have gear noise.

Gear noise is a whine, bearing noise is a roar. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference.

Hi Carl,

Anything is possible....

I looked it over, did not see any marking, part numbers or the like.

To me it looked crude. I would have expected a part like that to be a little more refined or more finished.

I had no idea the thing was made out of gingerbread...

The packaging looked convincing, but since the part itself had no cosmoline on it is suspect.

The only other gears I could find were Omix-ada....

If I ever find a quality gear I may still replace my original, but right now a little whine would sound pretty good to me..

I can get the intermediate gear and shaft out in just about an hour, assembly is about the same......

These trannys/transfer cases were used in other vehicles. Maybe just do a search for T90 or D18 parts and leave out Jeep or Willys.

Well, I'm nearly back to square one...whatever that means...

I've put the original gear back in with the Novak shaft and bearings.

The awful roar that was there with the "new" gear is completely gone, but the high pitched whine is still there.

So I guess it's not the intermediate shaft.....

And on the bright side, I'm getting pretty good at swapping these things out...

so I'm going to drive it and enjoy it until it snows, and then think about what to do...

Maybe everything will "wear in" and smooth out......

The noise is the only issue. The noise is not causing any damage to anything but your ears. Mine whines and I just ignore it. Gears wear and whine over time and it hurts nothing but ears.

Nice photo. After a while you won't even pay any attention to the whine.
