Intermediate shaft question again..
« on: September 13, 2014, 11:03:15 PM »
OK,

The part I'm pointing to came in the new kit. I have a used one on the bag of parts that I removed on the 1st go-round, AND I have a new one in my collection of "extra" parts....

What is it and where does it go? I can't find it in any of the T/C diagrams that I have, unless it goes somewhere besides on the intermediate shaft?

And then there is this..the "spacer"? Does it go between the bearing cages? Once again I can't find it mentioned or can I find a picture, but it seems to be in all the kits...

So from what I can tell the washer in the first post is a thrust washer for the front output shaft....

What is it doing in an intermediate shaft kit?

Looks like you fell for the ol' "extra thrust washer trick". Walck's got me with it last year. Must be an industry favorite if you got the same kit from Novaks. It caused me a few days of severe anxiety too. Remember this?

Thanks Ryan,

I thought I remembered this coming up before.....I searched for that thread you posted.....Why do they do this to us?

I looked at several kits online and they all seem to have that thrust washer...

And I think that clip in the second picture also belongs on the output shaft assembly...  am I correct?

So the caged rollers go into the intermediate gear by themselves, no spacers at all..they do have a little end-to-end play...like 1/8"...does that seem right?

I tried to remember where that small washer in the second pic went I can't. I see that I had one in my rebuild kit and didn't make any panicky posts about "where does this thing go??" so it must have made sense to me at the time. I even just read through the Rick Stivers rebuild guide again and I'm still not sure. It's not a washer for the needle bearings by chance is it? There are two of those, not one, though.

I also don't remember if there was any end play with the caged rollers either. Sorry for being absolutely no help on this at all....

Hey Ryan that's a big help really, 'cause it means that two of us can't figure it out :-/

The thing in the second picture is a split ring, a retaining clip of some kind. I have one in the bag of old parts that is similar, and I'm pretty sure it's the clip that is on the rear output shaft..the one where you need to slide the bearing out of the way to remove...

When I get the old shaft out I'll see what is in there...but I've already replaced it and the roller bearings once, so I could easily have left something out the first time....

I'll call Novak in the morning and see why those parts are there....it is probably pre-packaged for several applications, they were all in the same parts bag and the shaft was separate...

I was going to tackle this today but my enthusiasm is fading.....

Well I did it....the old shaft and gear are out....the only parts in there were a thrust washer on each end, two sets of caged roller bearings and the shaft.....
