What is the purpose of this hole?
« on: August 09, 2014, 04:16:41 PM »
I replaced the rear pinion seal today which was leaking pretty badly. As I was cleaning up around the seal before removal, I noticed this hole. It almost looks as if the oil was leaking from there. The hole seems to penetrate the bottom lip of the seal recess. What is the purpose of the hole?

Good question....you would think that if the hole went through to the differential you would have a continuous leak...

Mine didn't have the hole...

Is it a Dana 44?

It is a Dana 44.
I put the new seal in and took it for a 20 mile ride. I slid some cardboard under and am waiting for the results. ;)

Pretty big puddle under differential after sitting for a couple days. It definitely seems to be coming from this .125" hole. I'm wondering if this hole was bored during the manufacturing process and then a pin/plug installed which has fallen out? I tapped in a small wooden (Bubba) plug to see if this stops the drip.

Maybe a self-tapping machine screw with lots of Permatex would seal it....

Or maybe you could just tap it and put the appropriate size machine screw in there.....

Weird place for a hole.....
