Windshield Glass
« on: April 06, 2014, 05:42:35 PM »
Howdy boys,

Who has the best windshield glass available? Just smashed mine. Lucky for everyone, this is supposed to be a family friendly forum and I won't go any further.
Thanks.

Most just go to a local flat glass supplier and have it installed too.. Any automotive glass shop should be able to do it, shop around, of course.

Edit: As Carl added, yes, it has to be safety glass, automotive stuff with two layers of glass separated by a heavy plastic layer...And the correct thickness.. If your former window is not completely missing it can be used for a pattern. Some older glass shops have books of patterns but honestly most just wing it on a simple 3A windshield.

New rubber will make the job easier and lessen the chances of the new glass breaking on rough roads, as hard old rubber will transfer more shock to the glass than nice soft new rubber.

It needs to be safety glass for windshields. There should be a pattern available somewhere on a site.

X2 on what Carl and Bill said.  When it came to put mine in, I think it cost me around $150 for the glass, labor and new rubber at a local glass shop.  Plus, if they broke the windshield it wasn't my fault!

Jessie, $160 at the local glass shop, don't buy the supplier rubber seal. Seems most glass shops don't like it and prefer their own.

Thanks guys. Looks like glass is $180 ish from walcks and whatnot. Not sure if I am insured for glass or not as of yet. So I don't want to pay 1.2 billion for the piece if I can help it.

If you want to try mail-order, go to Flat Out Glass.
http://flatoutglass.net
Good prices, good service, great guy.
But be prepared for the shipping services to smash it.
We tried three times to get a windshield and the shipper broke them all. We gave up and went local. Cost 50% more.

Jesse,
If you have SafeLite auto glass shops in your neck of the woods, many of their shops do commercial flat glass replacements for buses, big trucks, RVs etc. I took in my old shield that they used as a template. You could choose bronze tints, green tint, or clear.

They cut me a new piece for $86.00. Turn around time, 2 days. (They were pretty busy)

I installed it myself.

Just another option.

My local glass shop installed it for $135 out the door.  I carried in my frame and new seal from Walcks and walked out 2 hours later.

I had mine done locally also, dropped off windshield and seal, told him it was no hurry and just work it in, don't remember cost but it was no a lot and no shipping involved and he did a great job, just cut it to fit.
