From his ad:
This is a "J" motor so I guess that means it actually came out of a pickup or wagon, though they only used them until 1950 so a very short run. Meaning this is a rear block and what came in a flat nosed Willys truck (flat as in not a beak style of 1950 and on). This also means that this motor is 63hp rather than the 60hp that was in the CJ's. The motor was supposedly running when I bought it a year and a half ago, since then it has been sitting in a garage and not out in the weather

No Idea what he means by a "rear block" but the serial number indicates it came from a universal jeep to me. IT does have a front plate with both ears pointing rearward, and the right side of the plate is not very visible in the ad. You may need the adapter to install in a 3A chassis, and you won't be able to install a dual fuel/vacuum pump with that front plate. Best to just put a 3A front plate on it.

Also I don't think what I see inside the intake runners jives with a recently running engine.

Proceed with caution. It may be a fine running motor when cleaned up, or it could be a cracked piece of junk, you won't know until you examine it closely.

The prefix U was used on utility vehicles(wagons) My best guess on flywheel is a 97 tooth. Do you think he is trying to say it's out of an FC truck? I sure would want to see what the casting numbers on the block are and a pic of the head markings.

"J" prefix is common on early CJ2As.  The engine plate is 2A.  The head is WWII or earlier.

I agree with Bill.  Based on the crud inside the manifold ports, it is unlikely that it is a recently running engine.

It still may be a good buy if no cracks, but maybe at $200.00

MHO, as tim said a 2A front plate, I belive the "REAR" is a typo and the seller means "RARE" (hardly). I see a "J" s/n and a pad where the oil filter would be, this would give it a casting number of 641087 and the first style w/pad, and a gear driven cam, also without the truck intake manifold and carb, and vacume advance dist it would be a 60 hp engine, not anything more.  A common 47 2A engine, nothing more than a core for rebuilding, IMO not worth $300, unless the head was removed and the pan for inspection, and if looked ok, maybe $200, still to many what if's.  Hey it ran good when removed ::), they all did ;), ran even better in 47 8-).
