Fun stuff
« on: February 28, 2014, 06:37:45 AM »
Well, not really. I still have brake issues. Seems the PO used whatever brakes they could throw on and get working. Trying to locate parts that match what was on there has been quite an issue and expense.
I've had to deal with the stuck drum on the front which required a 12 ton hydraulic puller to remove and destroy. Once I get the brakes addressed and correct them it is time to move on to the rear differential drain plug that will not come out. Nothing remains of the plugs recessed head to remove. Drilled a hole and tried the largest easy out I could find and it won't budge. Kind of like that 70's GMC steering wheel that refuses to come off and bends grade 8 bolts like butter when using a wheel puller. I swear this thing is cursed. I'm beyond frustrated! Fun times, fun times.....
Anyone in NE Ohio that likes beer?  :P

SteveZ, Brake drums and steering wheels are like dinning on shoe leather, even a beer does not level out that frustration. I have a shinny new steering wheel and two new rear brake drums and the satisfaction that I won that long, expensive, hard fought battle.... I think

We all have been there if you own and work on Jeeps.  "Early to bed, and early to rise, work on Jeeps and make up the lies"!  A Jeep slogan. You're going to have more stories to tell us! ;D John

The cover is stamped steel so put the largest easy out in the hole in the plug and set it in real tight. Have a wrench handy to turn the easy out. Take a acy torch and heat the cover around the plug to a red heat without heating the plug. Grab the wrench and turn the plug and it should come out.

You have  to leave the cover on the rear axle or have it clamped to a steel table.

I can remove the one on the cover no problem. It's the drain plug on the bottom that I can't get out.

SteveZ,
I learned a long time ago do not mess with that plug.  It has been dragged over everything you can think of and most likely pressed the threads into something unlike a spiral. Now I just remover the cover to drain, if it starts to be stubborn. I have wasted a lot of my life on the $&?! things!  Once, I had to remove the axle and turn it down side up, to remove the plug I had drilled through.
