Side Mount Radiator Variants

Folks, can anyone describe how it is that some radiators that appear to be original have the cap set off and the overflow tube extending off to the left while others go to the right?  Is this an indication of a design change, interchangeability, or a replacement part?   Any info would be appreciated,

The left handed ones are made in Canada.

I would lean toward it being a replacement radiator. There should be a little tag along top with date code on an original radiator

A picture of your radiator would help us to tell you if it's a replacement or not.

I know some bubba found it more easier to change the radiator when installing an Hi-Lo hydraulic pump with a governor. It might be one reason.

An original radiator will have the filler cap off center to the passenger side.

Hey guys,
Here's a photo of the numbers on this radiator of mine.  Again, its in a 49 3A, and as you can see it has a 49 date stamp on it.  It mounts seamlessly to the grille, and other than the filler cap being located more toward the passenger side, and the overflow draining to the passenger side, it is in every other respect identical.   Judging by the condition of the mounts and everything else, it looks to have been in place a long time.   If it is a replacement, is it likely that they would do so with one from the same model year?   if they were available, why not just go with the "normal' kind?    I've attached a couple of pictures I robbed from Ewillys showing another such rad in a CJ3A, and also a CJ2A rad with the same situation.  Comments anyone?

Oops, I meant filler cap moved to the drivers side, of course...

Here is a picture of mine, which I recently painted...counting the indentations in the front of the tank, my filler is about 3 indents from the left side of the picture, and your's about three from the right side.

Does your top tank have a second flat area that could be cut out for a filler neck? I remember mine having a area where a filler neck could have gone..

Yes, mine has an additional flat spot where the filler might otherwise be...

Well,  mine is an R-442 and your's is an R-443. But I don't know what that means....

May I ask what the Harrison part number is on your Rad?  Mine is 3124764.  They seem to be all over the place.

Mine is 315219?...the last digit is not readable in the photo I have and the radiator is over in storage for now. I'll check it later today.

I wonder if that is a serial number?

I just looked at mine and it is 50 M and an R442 with cap to the right. I believe the 442 and 443 are what type of construction the internals are regarding how many cells. A little foggy but recall the 3 is a heavy duty radiator over the 2 which was standard.

Do you think you might have a 2 A radiator?  I've got a 50 3 A, it has a 2 A hood and rear end, both original.  But it has the right 3 A radiator.   Willys was famous for using up previous model year parts during production of the next year model.  Most OEMs turn left over production parts over to the service parts group.  Not Willys.

The 2A and early 3A radiators are the bottom mount design, and the filler port is still on the passenger side.

I have no answer for the filler being on the driver side.
