Timing Gears

I have a 3A, but it has a GPW engine that is chain drive.� My current project is a true 3A engine with timing gears and I'm just starting to get into it.� I need to replace the front engine plate.�

Pulled the timing cover and pan.� The nylon cam gear looks very good, but I don't see the 'Dot' that aligns with the crank gear dot.� The dot on the crank gear is a small zero "O" more than an indented dot.� It's pretty easy to figure out where TDC is with the pan off, but I was surprised that the gear isn't marked.�

Is it possible to install these gears backwards? Or, more appropriately, with the outside face, toward the inside?

Also, What is the appropriate puller to use for this type of gear?

I don't believe they can go on backward.  If I remember right, its a conical fitment.� My timing mark was very hard to see on mine.� I suppose you could make your own mark if you knew everything was working how its supposed to before pulling it off.
There is an official tool but I can remember where I saw it.� Here is how I got mine off:

I still have my old timing gear....I don't think you could easily install it front-to-back but as you know anything is possible...

The hole is not conical, it measures ~1.124 on both sides....

You can see the mark on mine, but actually there are a couple marks, but this one looks more "factory"

My W.O. markings are facing out on mine, so I think it's installed correctly.  I just wonder if the crank gear could be turned inside out, along with the cam gear, and still function.  I doubt it.

Randy, is that how your mark looked, or did you accentuate it a little?  It looks very similar to mine after I found TDC.
That is a slick set up Brett.  Major General Rigg will be showing his face over at my place tonight.

Looks like I'll be adding some timing marks on the timing cover too.  The flywheel is a later version with no marks.  The cover is an earlier version with no marks.  Are we having fun yet?

I know what you mean.  My flywheel is blank as well and for some reason my crankshaft pulley's notch is not in the right place to set timing.  I had to ad a notch myself after a struggle of finding TDC by playing the fish a wire thru plug hole trick by Vernco.
Good luck getting that gear off.

I did not do anything to the mark..The machinist could have done something to it, but there was no reason to as we were going to replace it from the beginning....
