E-Brake cable clip?
« on: November 12, 2013, 01:01:45 PM »
I was going to post a question on this long ago, but forgot.

When installing my E-brake cable i noticed that it routed very near to the front drive shaft and there was no apparent means of securing it to the bell housing. But there was a unthreaded hole in the bell housing in just about the right place..

So I ran across this from the 2a forum

http://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/e-brake_topic25294_post221424.html?KW=bell+housing+cable+clip#221424

And then I remembered having some generic sort loom/frame clips..

Does anyone have a picture of the original style clip? Was it the same as the 2a?

I have the same question.

My cable is very near the driving shaft and I'm sure it will touch it sometime.

I notice this:
I installed the clip in the opposite direction at the cross member. Maybe it enough to get it out of the way of the driving shaft. I will check it this weekend.

I already check on my old cable and I have only two clip, one at the firewall and one at the cross member. My new cable from Walck's came with the new clip at the same area.

I never saw the clip at the bell housing. Not sure if I have one.

I think I tried putting the crossmember clip the other way around, but that would have required drilling as the tab hole is smaller than the bolt hole...

I remember checking into that and there is a threaded hole on the bell housing 1/4-20 that cable is secured to with a strap/clip The only other places are leaving the firewall and on the crossmember holding the tranny/xfer where it ends

That photo over on the CJ-2A forum shows the correct clip for a CJ-3A. On a CJ-2A the hole is threaded and on a CJ-3A it is not threaded.

Thanks Bob,

I'll bet they are as scarce as an original tool box floor....but at least they are in an area that might have a liberal coating of grease.

I think they are scarce because the clip does not hold well in the unthreaded bellhousing hole. I actually threaded the hole in one of my 3As so the clip has something to grab.

I almost threaded mine..it looks about right for a 1/4" tap..but for now the other clip will work just fine...

Well that makes sense to me as I have a utility engine in my first jeep and it has a 97 tooth flywheel. I would consider epoxy in the hole with a 1/4-20 stud to put a clamp on if it looked like it would cause that cable to flop too much or tap it.

Mine pops out all the time. A threaded hole would be a much better solution.

I'll see if this clip stays in...if not maybe a self-tapping bolt and a different clip will work....

Both of my 3As use the same style as the one Bob posted. I find the thing a real pain to take out. They seem to grab pretty good!
