My CJ-5 dipstick has a baffle just over 1/2 way up..I suppose all F and L 134's have the same dipstick.

On the 51 3a the little baffle is gone.....the engine has been rebuilt so it's not in there... :D

But my question is, do I need this baffle and what does it do?

Is it just there to keep the dipstick from vibrating wildly?

That baffle is news to me.My one engine is a utility engine and the other is an original 3a engine and neither have a baffle.

Hmmmm...a mystery!

The 3a stick has a little tab and a couple of small notches where the baffle used to be....

I guess the engine gets along fine without it....I'll get a picture later...

Some had it in earlier years and then they seemed to dissapear.  It is a sought after piece as there are not many left. The 2a's had them

Hmmm, I seem to recall that my old 55 CJ5 had the baffle, but I don't think my 49 CJ3A does.  Might be an F-head thing.

My L134 has the baffle.  Cant say its original or not.

Mine does'nt have it but does have the notches. I never notice it before.

Maybe there are a lot of baffles living in the oil sump that have fallen off.

I need to go through the box of used engine parts that the machinist gave me and see if there is a baffle in there!

But, maybe that is why they stopped putting them on the dipstick...

I'm not sure if it would fall into the sump anyway, as the stick goes through a small hole on it's way to the sump and there is a side passage for the oil...so no gaping hole down there...

Before I put the oil tube/dipstick on the engine I was attaching the oil filter, and sure enough, I dropped a blind nut and it went straight into the hole for the oil tube..... :o.....thankfully it was resting on that casting and did not fall into the pan....!

My 54 3B F head has that baffle, I believe my 49 L135 has a tab on the stick where the baffle broke off.
