Exhaust/Intake manifold fit??

I bought a new repro exhaust manifold.

With the intake and exhaust flanges against a flat surface the holes that attach the two manifolds together do not line up...

With the holes lined up the flanges are no longer on a level plane...

With the two exhaust manifolds bolted together via the heat riser/intake mating surface, all the holes line up perfectly..

Do I have two weird/faulty intake manifolds?

What you have is a poorly machined repro manifold. It looks to me they machined to much off the surface that mounts to the block. What they probably did was use a manifold that was heavily machined as a guide to machine their product. It would be better if they sold them not machined.

I've twisted these things every which way and I just am not sure which manifold (intake or exhaust) is at fault...I'm beginning to think that the holes where the intake bolt to the exhaust are in the wrong place relative to the flanges that bolt up to the block, because everything else is darn close..

I also measured the thickness of the flanges and every other area that could be compared and i just haven't found the fault...it may be that there is a little here and a little there.

I talked with the machinist who is doing the engine and I'll take the whole lot down to him and we will go over everything and see what turns up. He said that he may even have an old exhaust manifold in his storage room that we can compare to..

The manifold flanges can be surfaced to fit better but 1/8" is just too much..

Boy....that does not look very good at all.  Just looking at the photos, I would agree with Carl.....that looks like a poor reproduction part.  Not only would I be concerned about it sealing properly, but I would worry about it warping or cracking in the future due to a poor mold....

He might have a good, used OEM part.  I have bought several original parts from him and had very good luck with them.

I talked with Carl at Walck's and he said that I should send it back along with the intake manifold, and they would match up my intake with another repro exhaust manifold for a good fit...

You sure can't fault their customer service....
