So I got the starter, generator, and voltage regulator back and installed this weekend.  I can't really tell is they made any difference yet because another problem has popped up..

I had managed to get the jeep started and was letting it warm up when I started hearing a really loud, nasty knocking from deep inside the motor.  I quickly shut it off and began cussing because it sounded a lot like a spun bearing.  After cussing some more I decided I better pull the pan and take a look at the bearings.  Imagine my surprise when the oil drained out with the consistency of water and reeked of gas.  It didn't take too long to figure out that my fuel pump has probably bit the dust.  Could be contributing to the hard starting also.  I should have known, the fuel pump was one of the last things that I haven't replaced/rebuilt.  It was a glass top double action pump with barb fittings on the vacuum lines and looked very similar to the last one in Nate's posting on fuel pumps.  I really liked the glass top....

Oh well, a quick visit to Walcks web site and I should have a new double action fuel pump by next weekend.

I hope all the gas in the oil didn't destroy the bearings. I believe I would drop a few caps just to check it out while the pan is off.

Yeah, gas in oil can do bad things to an engine!

I plan on taking a look at the bearings, but first I was going to change the fuel pump.  Then I was going to put in some fresh oil, start it and flush the system to get the contaminated oil/gas mixture out.  I was going to do this two or three times before I dropped the pan and checked the bearings...

The problem is, the gas washed the oil out from the bearings (or diluted it so much that it lost its lubrication). If you start it with nothing in the bearings, it could be a major problem. Perhaps, prime the oil system with a grease gun via the pipe plugs on the drivers side of the block.

Over fill it with oil  let it sit for a half of a day then hand turn it  Then drop the oil out look at it to see if any metal parts put the right amount of  oil back in.  Hint; you can use the same oil just filter it through a sock just in case of contaminates also you will see the metal parts better if there are some.  Then crank it without start to circulate the oil a little better  then start it up.  The reason for the first overfill is so the rod bearings are submersed in oil soaking some in.  This is the way I would do it since you had knocking sound.  Be sure to have the finger on the key for a little bit.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread my problem turned out to be the fuel pump. Mine is also a glass topped, fuel/ vac. When I took it appart, oil was getting into the vacuum side of the pump. I really wanted to keep this pump so I bought a rebuild kit from Walcks. Works like a new pump again and my hard starting warm problem disappeared.

Well, I thought I ruled out my fuel pump early on.  I had checked my fuel pump earlier in the build and was getting plenty of PRESSURE, but I didn't check my VOLUME.

I may still rebuild my glass top pump, but my car club is sponsoring a car show in about a month and I'm really trying to get it going.  I don't really feel like trying to track down the right rebuild kit as I'm not entirely sure what my pump is off of originally.  But like I said earlier, I hardly ever throw my old parts away    I still have several small parts and pieces to refinish and bolt on and I'm running out of time quickly!

I just received my shipping notice from Walcks and I should have my pump here on Thursday.

I installed one of those fuel pumps a month or so ago. On Sunday it started spewing fuel all over the side of the motor and drizzling all over the ground (while driving). The gasket under the "top bowl" had failed and was letting gas fly everywhere. I'm not sure if it was a defective gasket or if I didn't re-seat it properly when I had it apart - could have been either.

Last night, I cut a new gasket out of rubber gasket material and it seems to be working. I'll feel better after I drive it around some. Just a heads up to keep an eye on yours....and yet another good reason to keep a fire extinguisher on board. Something like that could get ugly in a real hurry.

So I got my fuel pump installed and it started a lot easier.  Unfortunately............after flushing and priming the engine with fresh oil the knock didn't go away.  So I dropped the pan and took a look....and didn't like what I saw.
