Wagner Lockheed Master Cylinder

Is this an original or is it a replacement? It has an aluminum/alloy body, steel top cover held on with six bolts...cap is partially broken but has Made in USA stamped inside..I'll get a picture up soon...

Randy, I'm no expert, but I don't believe that is an original style MC for a Willys.  Every version I've seen is Lockheed Wagner, but the body is Cast steel, not aluminum.

Tim,

Thanks. I believe you are right. I've googled it and found mention in classic car forums but no mention of it being used in a CJ.....My CJ-5 has the cast iron type ....

That aluminum master cylinder is correct for a late CJ-2A and early CJ-3A. Don't throw it away, I will pay the postage to save it.

Thanks,

Thanks Bob!

If it's correct I will try to rebuild it. I think I saw kits somewhere...if it needs a sleeve I'll check into that...if it's too expensive to repair I'll let you know...

So the master cylinder is out and it looks to be in excellent condition...I'll get a kit for it and re-install......I came very close to ordering a replacement from Napa yesterday...glad I didn't....

Do you hone aluminum master cylinders or just leave them alone?? I see no pitting or corrosion in the bore.....

Thanks again Bob, I would never of thrown this one out as I keep nearly everything, but I would have gotten an "off shore" replacement..

Now I hope the wheel cylinders are usable. This brake system has had work in the past as all the lines are newer, and this master cyl's rubber cup was in very good condition..almost usable...

If there is no wear, pits or marks I wouldn't hone it. Just clean it real good and brush out the bore and reservoir and be sure there is no dirt inside of it and rebuild it. Are you sure it doesn't already have a sleeve in the bore?

A sleeve would be brass, is that right? There is no sleeve that I can detect. There has been some brake work done to this jeep over the years and I'm pretty sure it was in regular use up to the early ninety's.  I'm a little surprised at the condition of the bore, but I'll take it. There is corrosion on the outside of the casting but inside all is clean.

I just cleaned it more thoroughly with spray brake cleaner and swabbed it out with a paper towel. There are a couple small pits in the bottom of the bore, about half way down. I'll think about this...I could send it to Apple Hydraulics for a sleeve...then I would know that it is good to go.....or stop...
