Fel-Pro Complete Engine Gasket Set
« on: January 16, 2013, 08:02:23 PM »
I am going to replace the timing chain on my engine. To do this right, I need the oil pan gasket too. So, I decided to buy the complete gasket set from Advanced Auto Parts...

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_full-gasket-set-felpro_19782581-p?vehicleIdFromReq=-1&isAllVehicle=true&vehicleIdSearch=-1&searchTerm=fs+7285+b&showTitle=#

Even though I don't need to use all that this kit includes, I figured I may as well have some of the other gaskets on hand.

Impressive kit. 95% of it is Made in the USA.

My problem is, what in the heck are some of these for? Most are obvious. Some should probably be on the engine and probably aren't.

For example: 4-Cover Retainer Cap?? I think these are 4 small fiber washers.
 ï¿½ 1-Oil Float Support??
 ï¿½ 1-Oil Pump Shaft??
 ï¿½ 1-Crankshaft Oil Slinger??
 ï¿½ 1-Push Rod Cover??
There is also something that looks like the rope style rear main seal, but it's longer than the actual set of rope style rear main seals that are already included with the kit.

I know many of you have done recent rebuilds. Can you help me with a few of these?

Descriptions and diagrams would be very helpful.

Thanks,

Tim

Tim, I too bought one of those sets when I rebuilt my engine last summer. Trouble is, I can't remember what some of those you mentioned are far. I still have some of them left over but that happens with almost every complete gasket set I have used. The extra length of the rope hurts nothing, just roll it in the groove and trim the ends. When you install the rear main cap be sure to put a very thin coat on the mating surface of the main cap to keep oil from migrating past the machined surfaces. You don't want to have a lot of RTV on the surfaces, just a very thin film and none on the block surface. Be sure all surfaces are free of dirt and oil.

Thanks Carl.
I will try to Google some of this, but I always start here at home.  The extra rope seal is the most confusing.  Besides the rear main seal kit (which includes the two ropes seals and the two rubber plugs) is there a rope seal in a different location on the engine?

In a lot of cases the kits are for more than one engine, and span across several years so they include all of the updates.

One word of caution, I had a Felpro gasket kit when I built my motor, I found out the hard way that the oil pump cover gasket is not the correct thickness, my builder thinking he was doing right, took out my NOS gasket and installed the Felpro one, 3 miles after getting it running for the first time the pump siezed up and took the teeth out of the pump, shut me down on the highway.  Towed it home and took the pump out, cam was OK but the pump was locked up tight and missing teeth.  When we loosened the bolts on the cover 1/8 turn it loosened right up.  Turned out the gasket was too thin allowing the cover to rub on the pump gear after it heated up.

Before you use that gasket you might want to measure the gasket against an NOS gasket.  If you need one of those John at Midwest Military has them.

Just sayin.

Hey Gun...interesting. I don't need to replace the gaskets for the pump or cover, but the word of caustion is appreciated.

They may have resolved that issue.

The kit includes multilple oil pump cover gaskets. Probably got tired of hearing from folks like you. ;)

The long rope is for the early (pre CJ-3A) timing cover seal.

Thanks Bob.

So, this being a GPW engine means I might need to use it?  My timing cover does have a steel with rubber seal on it now, which does not leak.

...or am I thinking of a different seal?

I don't know a thing about GPW engines. The safe bet would be to use the same type seal that is being replaced.
