Front main leak
« on: October 15, 2012, 08:31:33 AM »

I have finished a rebuild of my engine and installed it for testing in my frame. It fired right up with good oil pressure. My problem is the front main seal leaks a little and that was running it for a very short 2 minutes maybe. So it will be a problem with the engine at temperature. The crank pulley is a new repro ( it measures good). Any ideas from those of you that are more familiar with these engines? I was wondering if I installed the seal in backwards. New gaskets and a seal have been ordered.

If it leaks now it will continue to leak. The seal lip points toward the inside of the engine. If the pulley seal surface diameter is the same as the factory spec it should seal ok.

Thanks Carl

I took a better look at my repo crankshaft pulley and found the mounting bore was tapered about .005 and the concentricity between the mounting bore and the seal running diameter was about .005 out.

So I took my old pulley out of the junk pile and cleaned, straightened and painted it. Then I put it on my engine and what do you know, no leak.

That's one of he reasons I am reluctant to use reproduction parts. They seem to have a lot of issues.
