Emergency Brake Retractor Spring
« on: October 08, 2012, 03:33:40 PM »
Can anyone tell me the particulars on the retracting spring on the emergency brake for a 1951 CJ-3A? The spring was missing when I bought the CJ and can not find any information on it. Any help would be greatly appriciated. I am taking my CJ to Colorade San Jaun Mountain Rage and do not wnat to go trailing wihtoiut it installed on Jeep. Thanks to all in advance.

You can use a heavy duty coat hanger to cut a wire out of. Buy a 3/8" dia screen door spring and cut off about 6" of it and bend a loop on that end. Bend a hook on one end of the wire and lay on the floor under the Jeep. Look for a bracket with a hole in it on the bottom of the tub behind the parking brake. When you find it hook the spring on the parking brake lever and pull the wire back to put tension on it. When you think it's tight enough mark it and bend a hook in it, cut the excess off and hook it into the hole in the bracket.

Go Jeeping.

Here's my ghetto setup.  Nothing fancy about it and does the job.  Don't get to wound up in the particulars of it.  Just go to the local hardware shop and buy a suitable spring.
