Greasey brake drums

I'm rebuilding the brakes and the interior of the brake drums are coated in grease with the obligatory dirt and grime. Both sides of the backing plate were also covered and the recess where the anchor pins are was real thick. Some brake cleaner, a couple rags and rust removal cleaned them right up.

My question: is this normal or is this an indication of over-zealous lubrication by the PO? Maybe oozing in from the axle? Grease inside the brake drum doesn't seem to me to be normal or desirable.

BTW - built an electrolysis rust removal gizmo/bucket/setup and that works very nicely. Its SCIENCE! �;)

I just went through the same thing. Either your PO was over greasing the wheel bearings, or your axle seals are bad. My seals were bad, the ones right at the backside of the wheel bearings at the end of the axle tube.

I had this problem with drivers side rear.  just replaced both sides since I was replacing all the brakes anyway.  I still have a front seal to put on, found out it leaked after filling steering knuckle when servicing.  When i bought my running willys I found it is best to replace the safety stuff more for peace of mind.  i still have e-brake and flat front springs.  at least I know it will stop and hold on a hill if I need it too.  I still pack  a couple of medium size arkasas rocks in back just incase.  Good luck, you gotta love stress and disapointment when working to keep these old warriors going.

As I've gotten the rear brakes pulled apart and cleaned - drums, back plates, spacers, etc...I've noted that the outer seals need replacing. I think that may be the problem. I'm replacing them and just keep my eye on things. Working my way forward on the frame so still a long way to go before we get on the road.
