Engine serial number decoding
« on: March 21, 2012, 04:56:16 PM »
In the other tear-down thread it was noticed that I have an F-134 in the CJ3a. I've been thru the sites as best I can and can't seem to find any documentation with info that decodes the engine number that matches up with the number I have: 1T57638. What I find all describe 11 digit serial numbers. I only have 7 and those don't line up with the documentation.

Clearly not the stock engine, but I would like to know how old it is.

Anyone got any suggestions?

A 1T engine would have originally been in a Willys Truck. As far as what year truck, I dunno, but maybe someone on the Willys Tech mailing list could tell you.. Are you saying your jeep is titles with a 1T truck engine number  but it now has an F head in it?

F Bill: The Jeep is a CJ3a with an F-Head Engine. The serial number on the engine is where it should be - up front by the water pump - number 1T57638.

Bob - The casting number is 8082798-W-13-D-AR CU-CR.

The only other marking on it that I can find is on the driver's side:  3 - 3  F

I love a mystery!

JB ... My 1950 CJ3A has L134 flat head (valves in the block) engine with a boss plate number 4T24846.
The "T" has been a mystery to me as well. As F Bill said and Carl stated to me in a past post the engine most likely was in or being built for a Willys pick up truck. I can not find a "T" boss plate number in any of the listed records. My 641087-L-W10A N1-CR-N block cast number is vastly different from yours, strange again.
Sorry to have added more issues then answers..

I don't know much about F head engines. Looks like you may have inserted and extra digit in the casting number. I'm gonna say it's a mid-50s motor.

Bob - yep, mistook some stamping flash as a digit. The '13' should be just '3'.

I know that the F head is probably not everyone's forte here on the 3a site, but thought I'd ask here if anyone knew or could suggest places to look.

Gonna go post out to the 3B forum and maybe a CJ5 forum to see if they have any ideas.

F Bill - truck engine...that's a little more than I knew before.

Thanks for the input!

Think I'm gonna settle on calling it an F-134 Willys truck/station wagon engine from 1950-54. Since F-Bill indicated that it was likely a truck engine, I found a reference to truck/sw engines being painted blue (which mine is) indicating a low compression model.

F-134 Colors

Heres some info regarding F-head color codes. This is from a reprinted Master Parts List for the wagons and trucks, so I dont know if it applies to CJs. It is for complete engines and lists them as follows:

ï¿½ Painted black, 7.4:1 compression, and the description is low altitude domestic, high altitude export
ï¿½ Painted yellow, 7.8:1 compression, high altitude domestic
ï¿½ Painted blue, 6.9:1 compression, low altitude export

http://www.earlycj5.com/technical/engines/

Matched the compression to the Kaiser-Willys site on trucks/wagons and found this:

Quote
Willys Truck Engines
4-134 F Head Motor(473)
Years Offered:
1950-1954 473 & 475 Models (Including Pickup, Stake & Cab / Chassis, FFC)
Engine Type: 134 CID (2.2L) F4-134 Hurricane 14
Number of Cylinders: 4
Cubic-In. Displacement: 134.2 cu. in. (2199,53 cm 3)
Horsepower: 72@4000 rpm
Torque: 114 lb-ft. (15,7 kg-m.)
Compression Ratio: 6.9 to 1
Valvetrain: F-Head

Also, it doesn't have a PCV, instead having a road tube so that makes sense too.

So at 1950-54 it's of the same vintage as the Jeep itself and I can be happy with that.

Thanks for the help.
