Clutch/Transmission/Bearing Smoke

Made the first trial run of the running chassis today. Overall it went very well but I have a problem with the engagement of the clutch. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I know you guys will spot it immediately. I'm pretty sure what used to be a pressed on bearing is now loose....after billowing a lot of smoke. I think it got hung up engaged to the clutch disc and spun itself loose? I am making these trial runs so if I have to pull the motor or transmission out it won't be as bad as there is no tub installed yet. Thanks.

That's your Throw out bearing. I'm pretty sure it shouldn't smoke. �Here is a photo of mine when I took it apart.





You may know all of this, but when you push on the clutch, it pulls the cable that is attached to the clutch fork. �The fork forces that throw out bearing against the 3 pressure plate fingers. �Those in turn release the pressure on the clutch plate and allow the engine to spin freely.

You throw out bearing could be shot. That might be why there is smoke. �Is the small spring still attached or broken? �If it's not attached, or broken, it won't pull the bearing back off the fingers.

What did the clutch feel like when you started having the problem?

My first thought is that the bearing is on the carrier backwards.  That would have the rotating part of the bearing against the back of the carrier instead of against the clutch fingers, and the fixed part attached to the inner race could be rubbing against the fingers.

Good eye. �Bearing does look like it's backwards.

The throwout bearing is brand new and it does appear to be backwards...and roasted. Looks like I'll be be ordering a new one. If that's the only thing I installed backwards after "My First Transmission Rebuild" I won't complain.  I believe the rest of the clutch system is engaging and retracting as it should. Good eyes and input guys, you are two-for-two in 24 hours on solutions to the posts. Do you offer stock tips and marital advice with the same success rate?

Marriage advice is easy.  Always agree with whatever she says.  Even when she says you are wrong.  But of course marriage advice is always wrong anyway.

  Just like you said, that's why you do test drives with the body removed.  A lot easier to pull the tranny back and install a new throwout bearing.  My trouble didn't start till about 900 miles after complete reassembly.  Then I had to pull the engine and the tranny. Doing better this time, though.  Another 2000 miles and everything is great.  Good luck.  Keep us posted.
