Trying to get Running!!
« on: January 17, 2012, 09:51:08 PM »
New to the forum. Just purchased 1950 CJ3A that has sat for ten years.. will turn over and lights work, gas tank varnished. Can i start by somehow just gravity feeding carb with gas to see if it will run? cleaned plugs but need to check points?

Get a plastic squirt bottle and put a little gas in it. Have a friend try to start the engine and have him hold the throttle open about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle. As the engine is turning squirt some gas into the carb throat and it should run. You can keep it running by squirting gas in very slowly.

It's a good chance the carb is gummed up from sitting 10 years and don't even think about using the gas tank unless you can get it completely clean.

Also, ten years of crap and condensation on the bottom of the oil pan will be the first thing sucked up when you crank it over.

Do yourself a favor and drain the oil and stick your finger in the drain hole to determine if it feels muddy or just oily. If muddy, drop the pan and clean it first. If oily, stick fresh stuff in there and give the engine a try.

The excitement of hearing an old machine run can quickly come to an end when you hear bearings squeal for mercy.
