Front axle bearing cups
« on: August 06, 2011, 06:40:03 PM »
Took my front hubs (new) in to have the bearing cups pressed in and got caught short.  Are the inners a different size than the outers? (Dana 25's)

If i remember correctly the inner is larger than the outer, that said you can remove/replace bearing cups with out going to the machine shop.

Clean hubs and get all the grease out of the backs of the bearing cups, you should see 2 little notches in the casting that you can see the edges of the cups. Using a long punch(longer is better) pound out the cups a little at a time on each side of the edge of the cups. When you have the cup out, grind down the outer dia. of the "old" cup (cool in water as you go they get hot!) enough so it can easily slide back into hub.

Now you have the cup driver as a tool to  insert the new cups with, no need to lube new one, place old cup on top of new cup matching narrow edge to narrow  edge and drive away. look on back side of hub and you will see when cup has bottomed out.

A larger chisel laid across the race being tapped helps even out the force needed to re insert new cup helping to prevent "*" of cup and saving fingers too  ::)

The money saved you already spent on the next part of the jeep to be "worked" on, unless you need to visit somebody anyways. If so kindly disregard my rambling on..............

I got to wondering about the bearings and since I replaced both bearings on the left front wheel I looked in my maintenance log. Both the inner and outer bearings on my CJ3A are the same. The race is National 18520, the bearing is National 18590 and the seal is National 40566S.
