Exhaust System and Rolling Chassis(photos)
« on: July 25, 2011, 10:31:58 PM »
Okay, I am so excited. I have a rolling chassis!! I am working on the vacuum lines and exhaust.

I have a few questions on the exhaust. I bought the complete kit from Walck's. Pretty darn nice. I don't seem to have any alignment issues, but I have a few questions. I searched the old forum clear back to 2007 and this just doesn't seem to be an exciting topic, so I posted some photos to try and get some interest and feedback.

As my old exhaust system was a disaster, I have nothing to follow with regard to proper placement of the hangers except the two on the rear crossmembers. The obvious place to hang the rear pipe and muffler falls to the outside of the frame. Is this right? (See the last photo.)

Also, the tail pipe that Walck's provided does not fit very tight. It slides loosely into the muffler and when I say loosely, I mean loose. Is this standard for the tail pipe, or is it possible I didn't get the correct one? Walck's has been dead on with all my other orders, but I suppose they could have made a mistake. If this is what it is, then I don't want to make a big stink with Walck's and I could just weld it. I just don't think the clamp is going to tighten this gap.

It's been so long since the tub and chassis were connected, but I just remembered that the last exhaust hanger attaches to the spare tire support in the passenger wheel well on the tub.   Unless this was a Bubba hanger, I think I figured it out.

I still would like some feedback on the loose tail pipe connection if possible.

Thanks,
Tim

I think Bubba used anything to hang a muffler... if he even had one! ;D

Your hangers look good to me. The tail pipe can be expanded a little bit if you take it to a exhaust system shop, or you can just weld it like you mentioned. I'm pretty sure the mufflers and tailpipes are coming from different manufacturers, possibly in the Philippines, so you can expect things to be a little off. I have noticed that with a number of Omix-ADA products.

BTW: Nice looking project so far! ;)

Very, very nice! You are really coming along with your project!

I also bought the exhaust kit from Walcks and was concerned about the tailpipe size. I had a muffler expander tool I used to bump up the OD on the tailpipe to make it a tighter fit, but in reality I probably could have just used the pipe clamp to tighten it down. You can pick up these expanders for $10-$15 at tool stores like Harbor Freight. They are pretty handy to have around to round out thin-walled pipe than may be a little bent or oblong.

I also dimpled the exhaust a little bit where it passed by the stay cable bracket on the transmission crossmember to avoid any future rattles.  Probably easier now than after the tub is back on. ;)

Again, nice work so far!

My tail pipe components all fit surprisingly well (different times-different manufacturers).

Just wanted to thank you for the great pics. It's always fun to see others projects and Jeeps. Looks like you are doing an excellent job on your project. According to my restoration experience a few years ago you are truly on the fun end as you assemble all new or overhauled components to your now emerging Jeep.

Because of the OD paint I have to ask whether or not you're making a WWII MB replica or a Korean War M38?

Please keep us updated with more info and pics.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the comments. I had to show somebody what I've been working on. The day I bought this Willys, I showed it to a few friends and comments they offered were "What a P.O.S!" I knew right then I was going to make them eat those words. I haven't showed this to any of them since I started the transformation. P.O.S., my A@#!!

Macrisel, I checked out the Harbor Freight Site. There are mixed reviews, but I will go get a pipe expander. If it breaks, I'll just take it to a muffler shop and have it adjusted as Chasm suggested.

Calvin, I'm never going to have a show winner with this thing. I am doing this for my enjoyment more than anything else. It's a true CJ3A with an excellent GPW (all serials ground off) engine loaded with F marks. I have always wanted a military Jeep, but they are very difficult to come by in the Denver, Colorado area. At least in the price range I can afford. I almost never see flatties out here.

I am attempting to replicate an M38 as it is the closest look to the CJ3A. I don't think I could pull off what Rocketeer did with his 3A. It will have the military look, but all of you would be able to immediately spot it as a CJ3A dressed like an M38. CJ hood, grille, and tail gate will give it away, as will the dash. I did cut and weld the tool notches into the passenger side panel. I love the way the tools look hanging off the side. It will have a blackout light, lifting shackles, bumperettes, pintle hook, military tires, spare tire and gas can mounted to the rear, M38 top bow set, Gamma Goat tail lights cut into the rear panels, and military stensils all around.
Once again, thank you for the positive comments.
