muffler heat shield
« on: June 21, 2011, 08:50:21 PM »
got the cj-3a going today and took her for a spin. all went well. I did notice that the floor in the bed got very hot from the muffler. i havent seen in any of the books a heat shield for this. i was wondering if i had the muffler positioned to high but it seemed to align up real good. the pipe and muffler was a kit purchased from walcks. any advise would be appreciated.

Larry, mine seems to be a little higher than that. I am going to put some of that double sided foil insulation  (automotive type) above the muffler up against the floor and see how that works, i already test fit it and it seems to stay up there good between drawbar braces and floor. I  will also get some of that adhesive foil duct tape to finish off the edges so the insulation is not showing were I cut it to size. I then will see how it works.

P.S. thanks for the pic,   BROTHERDAVID

Let us know how that works, Mine gets hot too and I worry about it a bit, a heat shield would be a good deal.

I found a real heavy rubber pad, about 1 inch thick at Tractor Supply, they call them cow pads or stall pads.. anyway I cut it to fit the whole back end from the seats to the tailgate, really cut down on the noise and helped with the heat too.  The old blind labrador likes to ride back there now, doesn't slip around as much I guess.

I made the mistake of letting my dog ride in the back of my 2003 TJ without any carpet or insulation. Was wondering why she was dancing around and wouldn't lay down. Turns out the floor was like a frying pan  :o  :(
