Fuel tanks mounting

I pulled a fairly new looking repro tank from the Jeep yesterday and found the bottom to be pretty rusted. The rest of the tank still looks new. The rust hadn't penatrated very deep and cleaned up easily.
The tank was sitting metal to metal on the floor pan. Is there supposed to be rubber spacers under there? The hold down strap had what looks like original welting under it. On the plus side, I found a 3/8" Snap On stubby combo wrench and a nice 3/16" T handle Alan wrench between the tank and the bed.

There should be a few strips of "antisqueak" material between the tank and the floor. I think the only real solution to the rusting problem would be to remove the tank periodically and clean out the dirt that gathers under it.

I cut 40# felt roofing paper in 3" strips and folded them over 3 times, so they were 1" wide, 3 layers deep for anti-squeek.  Installed in locations and at lengths as per Willys diagram.  Jim

2 thin strips of rubber cut from an old tire work great for mine. Leaves just enough space for me to lose stuff under the tank, yet it lets any moisture evaporate!

Thanks for the link and the tips. I have some rubber strips that should work fine.

Both the paper option and the rubber strips sound better than the two wooden slats (paint stir sticks?) that were under mine. Made for some really nice 1 1/4" rust marks in the floor pan where they sat.
