Oil Filter Cannister

Hi all,

I have a question about the original style  oil filter cannisters for the CJ3A. When I bought my jeep, a previous owner had removed the oil filter assembly so I bought one off ebay.

I didn't know much about jeeps when I bought it. Looking at pictures of original cannisters I can see that mine is different. The original ones appear to have two metal straps that connect the cannister to the engine mounting bracket.

My cannister doesn't have that. Instead, it has a flange on the back of it with four bolt holes. I had a friend make a custom bracket to mount it to the engine but I can see that the original style bracket wouldn't work with my cannister.

I'm not too worried about it not being original but it does call into question what kind of filter I need to buy. I purchased a filter from Oreilly's auto that kinda worked but it was too short.

Does anyone have the dimensions of the original filter/cannister so I can compare to mine?

Way to short won't work. You need to find out what type canister you have to get the right filter element for it.

It is critical that the oil filter housing has the correct size restriction built in. If the filter doesn't fit the bracket I would check to be sure it has the proper size hole in the stand pipe. From memory I think it's about 1/16" or less.

I have mine off the Jeep for cleaning and paint. �It is the style with 2 straps around the cannister from a 1945 GPW engine.



If this is the style you are looking for measurements from, I can measure it when I get home tonight. �Let me know.

That would be great athawk11! That would allow me to figure out if my cannister is a "standard" size or not. Mine looks like yours but without the two straps holding it.

I've got the motor ready to start for the first time but hate to start it without a filter so I've been itching to find one pretty bad!

I've got the one with the four holes in the bracket on the back as well, it uses a NAPA 1010 filter.  Which happens to be the same filter canister set used on the Farmall B and the Massey Harris 22, both made in about 1948-50.  If your out in Farm country or near it you should be able to find these in inventory at NAPA.  If not try Wix 51010 its the same filter.

Awesome!!! Thanks gunslinger!! I had a sneaky feeling that my filter cannister was from a tractor. The person I bought it from on ebay said it was for a Willys but oh well, as long as it works.

Luckily, I live smack dab in the middle of farm country so surely I will be able to find the correct filter. Thank you for the part numbers!!!

You may not need the measurements anymore with the help you received from GunSlinger, but I am a man of my word.

The cannister height with lid installed is: �8"

I have the "Use Military Standard Filer" canister on my CJ5's engine.  I use the NAPA 1100 filter element in that one.

On my 3A, I have the canister that looks like the military standard filter, but is quite a bit smaller.  That one takes a NAPA 1010 filter.  


I have also found a few canisters that are about 0.1 inch too short for a 1010 filter element and the 1010 gasket isn't quite right for the cover.  I spent a few hours with calipers and catalogs and decided a NAPA 1080 filter was the one to use.   So far, this has worked well for me.

Thanks for the measurements. It looks like our parts are similar but a little different. Here are my measurements:
Cannister
        Height w/ lid= 8.5" (to the top of the bolt)
        Diameter= 5.25" (without lid)

Filter
        Height= 4.75"
        Diameter= 4 1/16 "

This filter I have is a Wix 51006 and it is too small but I made it work by sliding it up the center post in the cannister over the oil outlet holes. This filter was the closest I could find.  Just estimating it looks like my filter is a good 2"  too short for the cannister. Going to try to find a Wix 51010 today and see if it fits.

My filter canister uses a Carquest 85010 (or equal).  I kept an old one in a sandwich bag and put it on the shelf, so I always know what it uses.  Jim
