Front of Engine Mounting Plate
« on: May 25, 2011, 11:20:20 PM »
I am in the market for a new front engine mount plate.  I have found conflicting part numbers, so once again I come to the pros.

I am after a CJ3A plate with passenger side dog ears back and driver side dog ears forward.  (Mine is currently a GPW style with an adatper)

Did the M38 use the same plate as a CJ3a?
Is the F-Head plate in the 3B the same as the L-head plate in a CJ3A?

3A plates seem to me, to be harder to find than the MB, GPW, 2A plate.

Thanks for your thoughts.

BobW is a wealth of information and will probably get in on this one soon! ;)

Bob just helped me with the conversion of a late CJ3A Kaiser / Willys "industrial" block to replace the CJ2A style block and front plate that I was using in my 51 CJ3A. My 2A style block was from a Willys Utility vehicle and had a 2A style front plate. It previously had adapters to get it to mate to the 3A frame mounts. The "new" block had a 2A style front plate which was just replaced by the correct 3A front plate. Now it fits perfectly on the 3A frame! :)

I guess since CJ3A production numbers were smaller, that the front plates are less common. I am sure if you post a wanted add at several of the Willys sites, someone will have one to sell or trade with you.

There are a lot of different engine front plates out there. M-38s are different, I think because of the generator. Early CJ-3B plates are the same as CJ-3As.

Tim,
Walcks has a used front engine plate for $47.25 at this link.

If that doesn't work out let me know, I have one I may part with.

Hey guys. Thanks for the info.
Matto, I saw that one at Walcks. I may have to call them and see if they still have it. Would you want to trade your plate for a GPW plate?

I did find listings for plates at:

Quadratec.com., but they list 922166 as the correct part number then descibe it as a front plate for an F-head engine. They list 2 others with Part # JO 927719 and 927719. Good price for all choices at: $26.99 Plus shipping.
 ï¿½
There is one listed at: RigidSteel.com, but I was shocked to see they will deliver in 2-3 weeks. 2-3 weeks...Really? I'm out in Colorado. I order stuff from Walcks and it gets here in 3 days.

I have never purchased items from either of these suppliers. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Matt,

I went ahead and bought the Quadratec plate.  I"m hoping I get what I expect.

I don't have the seat back sheet metal.  Heck, I don't have a back seat.  People want big $$$ for the repro and even more for original.  Someday, I might bite that bullet.  Unfortunately, I have other pressing needs.

I am keeping track of my restoration so far.  I can't believe what this thing is costing me.  Everytime I think I've purchased the last item, I turn another corner and drop $300.00.

I too started out keeping track of receipts and totaling them up as I went.  That lasted through the engine, steering, brakes and suspension....  Then I made it to the body  ::)  I have since just started throwing the receipts into a file to keep "in case I need to return something" and MAYBE I'll total them up one day....but I doubt it!  I'm pretty sure my new wife would think that I lost my mind  :o

Anyway....can you really put a price on this kind of fun?  ;)

After you finish your project, take a shovel and bury your receipts. Then dig a hole and bury the shovel.

I'm embarrassed to admit that not only did I keep every receipt, I actually made a spreadsheet and kept an itemized running total.  My receipts are in chronological order and so is the spreadsheet.  My wife??? Yes, she's aware of the total, still loves me, and enjoys riding in and driving the Jeep.  Just lucky.
